Hi,

I have been approached about a temporary nanny position working with a child with global delay

I have tried googling and finding out about it but thought that it might be easier asking mums who deal with it on a daily basis.

I understand that like the autistic specturm its different from child to child but just wondered if anyone could tell me a little about it.

My DS (8.1 yrs) has asd, gdd and verbal dyspraxia. Physically, he is very immature, scocially, about 2 years old, BUT he is very easy going, understands virtually everything we say and is an absolute love!! (you can tell that he's sleeping better now!)

They are all different, as all children are different, you just have to get to know them.

DD has GDDit's not a condition on its own, just a general description. In her case it means that she's been late hitting all her milestonesbut not right across the board. So although she is two on Sunday, and walks well, she has no speech whatsoever and thinks acts and feeds more like a one year-old.

sometimes it is a term used until the paed decides to give a more specific diagnosis. in our case dd2 was dx 'gdd' for 2 years until her cerebral palsy dx. so each child with gdd is completely different. we've had two nannies and were definitely looking for sometime to get very involved with physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, and lots of fine motor work, as well as more general childcare stuff, including socialisation...

in our case, dd2 is delayed across the board (nearly 5), but with the help of lots of spec eqpt, now walks, talks, etc (just in her own particular way lol)
one of the first things that i ask nannies is how they feel about disabled parking, wheelchairs, and getting stared at in the street lol.
