Has anyone used this with a child with learning difficulties such as autism? Has anyone even heard of it? A prospective new nanny for DS1 uses this technique but I'm not sure. I have done some internet research (no surprise there) but I'm still not clear on how it would help an autistic child. DS1 is only minimally verbal and has a short attention span - though he is getting better at jigsaws.

hello all- i was just doing some mle research and saw the question about it helping with autism.I have done 5 yrs in feuerstein methodology with autism being my interest and passion!i turned to this work as an answer for problems that i encountered with ABA-in terms of long term development and thinking skills.i have worked with several autistic individuals and have found this-feuerstein approach to be phenomenal.we all know ,that autism is complex and the ultimate answer to it....?!i find mediated learning is simple for parents to incorporate-especially as there is household to manage etc etc and one on one time may not be available.if anyone would like to know more....i'm here.

Hi Scurry - thanks for the further information. I have lost touch with the lady who was offering Feurstein but I'm wondering if maybe I should approach her again as I still have her email? Do you think it is useful for children with a short attention span? Thanks again for reviving this thread!

It is extremely useful for children on the spectrum and with a short attention span. The nature of MLE-in a nutshell-one filters info for the child-always with a clear intention, giving the info meaning and linking it to similar info.In this way a child will know what it is doing and why as oppose to following an instruction-which after enough repetition-yes,the child will be successful but are they really aware of what they have done or how it helps them?a component of MLE is also regulation of behaviour-it is amazing to start to see these special ones regulate themselves vs impulsive!ah,I could go on and on!In terms of the instruments(one can just do mle without the instruments/activities)they seem complex and like nothing we have seen before but it actually is simple once one has had all explained and they are visually appealing esp to ADD and ASD and thinking processes are built up.It is a very contrasting approach to more 'traditional' ones but it really is worth looking into-even if its just the MLE training for parents. How old is your child?it is the only thing that considers the individual child vs standard programmes with standard steps-do this then that-but what is the meaning?one has to be careful though-as some people trained in it,loose its essence and start to use tasks etc in a standard way therefore loosing the foundation of the individual.I am by no means downsizing any other methods and am well aware that this approach does not 'fit' in a way-but having worked with several approaches and then feuerstein-it is such an experience to see the changes and development that does not disappear.it builds the spirit and life vs not considering the individual and sometimes non-intentionally breaking them as the right way in and way they learn is not considered.
