Going to make own bread do i have to use a gf yeast or will normal yeast do. In the book I have yeast itself isn't down as a forbidden food/ingredien but as there is a gf alternative i just wondered?

ooh, look at that, I've been mentioned in a thread title

unfortunately, I have to tell you I don't know. When I've baked, I've just used normal easy bake yeast, but my baking has been none too successful (and always ends up tasting really yeasty) so will await more people with words of wisdom!

thanks silverfrog. I might use the normal yeast at the weekend whilst i'm waiting for my goodness direct order to come(its been a bit of a farce but should be with me on Monday).

If anyone else can advise please do!!!!

Yeast is not on the prohibited foods list our nutritionist gave us if that helps?

baking powder is of course another matter entirely

sory not to have been more helpful - as I said earlier, d1 won't touch bread (or most cakes) anyway, so I'not really been pushed to solve the gf baking issues...

I ought to anyway, as then dd2 could have sandwiches etc - it's on my list of things to do, one day!

silverfrog, only gf bread ds1 will even look at is lakelands mixes so if you do get some, try that.

I find gf breadsticks and dips go down beter tbh, bread was never meant to be gf

silverfrog · 20/06/2008 18:39

thanks, Peachy, might try it.

I had quite good success texture wise (normally the problem) when I made it from scratch, but taste wise came a cropper.

First time, I think the oil I used was rancid - really strong horrible taste.

so I tinkered a bit, and it was a bit more acceptable, but very yeasty.

and then I wondered why I was bothering as dd1 will refuse it whatever I do, and dd2 has never really had it so doesn't miss it iyswim.

might give it another try though.

hadn't thought about breadsticks, though - will have to get some as dd1 loves crunchy bisciut type things

we get the tesco gf breadsticks and send with a pot of gf egg mayo in lunches- seems to work well

I second Peachy's DS1's recommendation of the Lakeland bread mixes. Best I've tried - and way way better than the bricks I made myself...

Yeasts fine - its a fungus of soem ind isn't it?

I think, but I could have the name wrong, freebake.co.uk - have qa pretty good range of GF flours and teh bread and pizza mix coem with a pre weighed sachet of yeast.

If your goign to buy flour mixes nad bake from scratch - you NEED Xantham gum

BUT

Teh Orgran Cake mixes are actually OK - and far better hen my attempts at GFCF baking.. ( always tastes a bit like mash...)
The Orgran Bread mix is edible... but it does not make good toast.

If it packed lunches - and your blesed with kids who like raw veggies- you can send tehm carrot and cucumber and celery sticks and soem Houmus or something... Or if they are posh - like my eldest - you can make them Sushi rolls.. ( always seems odd that one - Oj I must nip to tescos for soem smoked salmon for my 7 year old..)
