SN children

Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

DS, not yet 2 and nursery have asked to make a referral to “inclusion/SEND partner”. Am heartbroken for him…..

DS is 2 next month. He has some speech delay- but has progressed the last 6 months, and now meets the cut off for Ages and Stages questions, as been past the cut off for 24months for a good couple of months.

has had issues at nursery with unprovoked scratching and biting of other children- has sometimes been 2 incidents a day.

Nursery manager is also concerned that although he does parallel play, he doesn’t play “with” the other children. He is the 3rd youngest in the group if that makes a difference.

He also lays down when playing with cars.

He is happy at nursery, seems to be interested in other children and pleased to see them when I take him out with friends, makes good connections with other family members, uses an spoon well enough, gives up easily with a fork, drinks well and easily from an open cup. Walked at 12 months. Pretty late to point, but does point now, although often with his hand and not single finger. Uses single finger to point in books. Babbles a lot, sings, “reads” etc.

I am brain dumping a bit here- I just feel like he must be quite bad if they are involving other parties before he is 2?

just can’t stop crying- I don’t want things to be hard for him.

Should have added- has had a hearing test, but they want to repeat as missed some sounds.

If the nursery is suggesting a referral, I would listen. It doesn’t necessarily correlate to the complexity of the SEN.

Thank you. Of course we will listen and go with the referral….. just feel like the fact it’s being picked up so early does mean his symptoms are more complex. I normally hear of stories of parents having to work so hard to get intervention/help/diagnosis,

His teenage sister is certainly ND, but she managed to get all the way to GCSEs before someone externally picked up on it (even though we’d come to understand she probably was mildly autistic/ADHD/dyspraxic)

That isn’t always the case. Sometimes it can be picked up earlier for a variety of reasons that don’t correlate to the complexity.

Plus, the nursery talking about a referral to the inclusion/SEN manager doesn’t necessarily mean they suspect ND. SEN and SEN support are based on needs rather than diagnosis.
