DS9 recently had an occupational assessment, he has struggled with his handwriting for years/ alongside other things. We got the report about 2 weeks ago

His visual motor integration was on the 5th percentile - so the age equivalent of 5 years 11 months ( for people who don't know this is things like the ability to copy shapes / letters using hands and eyes together )

He scored a 7 on his visual perception, 16th percentile age equivalent to 6 years 8 months ( this is a difficulty processing what he sees which can affect copying from the board, reading charts ect )

Instead of keep tying to get him to copy things when he clearly cannot ( he cannot even read his own writing ) I've showed him how to build his letters using single strokes ( he really really struggles when he tries to do a full letter or number in one motion, it's unreadable )

Since I've been showing him his writing has really improved ( he is very slow but at least now it's readable ) and I made a little letter formation thing for him, showed school said if they had somthing better please use it if not please laminate this for him ( they did )

And now they've said their going to do one to one with him to teach him how to write cursive

I just feel it's a waste of time, he can barely write in print form, never mind cursive. He's currently re learning how to write from basics as such, with almost every letter

I just don't understand why they think that after literally 10 days of support that he's ready for cursive ( he really isn't)

Apparently cursive is just how they writie at school but now shouldn't he get a special thing in place so he doesn't have to?

I've bought him lots of books to help him re learn how to do his letters and school have said let's not use them for now as we want to focus on cursive

Am I missing somthing? I just cannot see, how, if he struggles to copy shapes and letters, has been succeeding whilst he's been breaking them down. How is now suddenly jumping into cursive going to help him?

I just feel like their going about it wrong. When the OC sent all yhe activities he needed to do school asked me which they should do with him

Ilk go in and speak to them tomorrow I just want to vent on here as I really like his teachers they are brilliant with him and they think their being helpful which they are, they've not said this to be difficult or anything and I just want to get my frustration out now - it just seems daft when right now he isn't capable and I think we should just be focusing on getting his handwriting readable before we jump into anything else

Request a meeting with the SENCO.

I would be getting DS using tech and assistive tech. That will help in the long run.

I would also consider requesting an EHCNA.

Yep my son has dyspraxia and his handwriting became a disaster when they moved to cursive. Unfortunately schools will push it beyond what is reasonable because you can't get age expected in writing at end of year 6 without cursive writing.

I'd be pushing for him to type.
Then maybe work on number formation as typing maths is harder, (though I suspect not as hard as it used to be.)
