Explaining sensory processing difficulties

Just come across this online presentation. I know Stella - she has a great understanding of the sensory issues- didn't realise she'd done this. It's brilliant and a really useful way of explaining to grandparents/teachers/LSA's/friends the reason for ASD type behaviours.

Thanks - it mentions things relevant to ds I hadn't realised might be sensory processing problems (like not seeing a toy he has just dropped on the floor but picking up tiny specs of dust)!

OMG i never really thought of it like that! i suppose a great many of us just take for granted 'what' we see. It makes sense that my little dot (2y) suspected ASD gets terrified of me when i put a towel on my head, or dad takes off his glasses!

My DS is not on AS but seems to have some sort of auditory processing disorder. He was exposed to drugs and alchohol in utero and suffered early neglect (not by me). Have your DS/DDs been asessed for APD or SPD? It would be helpful for me to know a bit more about it.
Thanks

Hi Chegirl, welcome!
I would be interested in assessment replies also.
We had a session with OT but it was more for coordination and gross/fine motor assessment - I get the impression that SID/SPD are a specialised field for OTs.

We've done a (paper) SI assessment- given by the OT. It was quite revealing.

Can you link to paper Jimjams?

No sorry it was just something the OT used. A different OT used one a few years ago. I think its called a sensory profile. You tick boxes; it gets fed into a computer and the results get discussed. IN ds1's case showed lots of problems with the vestibular system.
