I will try to keep this really brief! Ds is 5, happy, comedic, fun loving, loves books, loving, no tantrums. Dream child in so many way.
Language disorder picked up early on but just started SALT in September. He is very hard to understand. Suspected autism due to special interests, working to his own agenda etc. Had an assessment and they ruled out autism as he is so sociable but scored borderline mild on cognitive side of the test (low iq). OT (for regulation mainly, he wants to do his own thing and gets upset or difficult if he's asked to focus on a task he doesn't want to. This is getting much better though) OT thinks he is very clever, a messer and a chancer who needs movement breaks and timers. Salt still thinks it is autism and it's impossible to get an iq score on a child with receptive and expressive language difficulties.
So confused, tired, worried.
Receptive language assessment last week showed extremely poor receptive language skills, which she said can be improved. However when she said he didn't know that a cow lived on a farm, I said he knows full well that they do (animals are his special interest). He couldn't pick the odd one out between a cat a dog and a lamp, but he could do a similar task without a problem for his homework. Still, there is of course a receptive language prob but as his OT said there is messing.
Principal rang this morning to say he needs more support to keep him focussed on task, stop him messing and trying to get out of jobs, he's behind in cutting, colouring and language. She stressed he has to learn boundaries, but he is good fun.
She also said he has come on in the last two weeks since the assessment. I got a fright with the iq score and have been working soooo hard with him, phonics, writing, games, literacy app. he now: knows his colours, can write his name, can identify more letters, colours much much better, can count to five. Could do none of this before.
I am so burnt out from all the voices, opinions, and even my child who is so hard to do homework with. I am doing all this privately as a solo mum (I care for my husband who has a brain injury and often doesn't know who we are). We don't have family support but home good friends.
He's a Leo through and through 🥰 and if his pronunciation had been fine I wouldn't have seen much of a problem but I had nothing to compare him to. Although he didn't point as a small child, that was what brought me to the doc in the first place.
Thanks for listening...just want a bit of encouragement x

I’m at the beginning of our SN journey too with my DS, so I can’t offer much advice, but didn’t want to leave your post unanswered. That’s great that your DS has come on so much in the last two weeks. I think that’s very encouraging. And it seems like you’re on track with various assessments that will hopefully get him the support he needs. I’m sorry that you’re having a difficult time doing this alone while also caring for your husband, but you sound like you’re a great mom and your DS is lucky to have you. Have you discussed applying for an EHCP with his school or any professionals? We are starting that process early next year with DS, who has a speech delay and suspected autism.

Your DS sounds lovely by the way! It’s so hard focusing on the challenges during these assessments and while applying for DLA, etc. I often need to take a step back and appreciate just how cool and amazing my little boy is.
