Please help 4 yr old asd son goes really sleepy in afternoon hes happily relaxing on sofa watching cartoons rubbing eyes looking exhausted but refuses to nap the afternoon.
After this tired spell goes extremely hyper with very bad behaviour like he's trying everything to keep himself awake getting tonsils out in 2 months due to sleep apnea . Im so fed up I can't help at all its either falling asleep or bouncing off the walls and smashing things and pulling my hair there is no inbetween . He is ok before this tired crash in the afternoon always in the go but happy in the mornings until about 3pm when he crashes

Sounds like hes got himself over tired and dysregulated. How does he sleep at night? I assume not great since he has sleep apnea whoxh obviously wouldnt be helping. I would try calming activities, no screens maybe nice warm baths, being out in fresh air does absolute wonders too. If you drive maybe try driving him around for a bit and letting him have a nap. I know all that is easier said than done. Im sorry I dont have more practical advice, but I promise it does get better and hopefully after the tonsils come out night time sleep will be much better and he wont be so tired in the afternoons

Hopefully the operation helps.

Another thing to think about is food/drink. Does having a snack before DS reaches the point of no return help? Are some snacks better than others? Does what he eats/doesn’t eat for lunch make a difference? Does he drink enough in the afternoons?
