Ds 12... do I go through with assessment

Ds 12 is such a fun sweet boy. He's always been different to other boys and we've just embraced the quirks.
Since starting secondary school he's become so anxious and overwhelmed
He is so worried all of the time
But he doesn't act out at all at school and when asked he says he's "ok"
School have declined to give him a pass to leave lesson as they feel he'll over use it and miss the work which I do see their point but he says he's sat in class trying not to cry the whole time or just feeling overwhelmed in general.
He has some friends he says but it's more like he clings to them as he's never invited along to anything.. they are all girls. He has no boy friends at all
I can list lots of things that I put down to his age and assumed he'd grow out of or just his quirks but now I feel that it may be more than "quirks"
I feel like I'm almost being mean if I list things that would be seen as issues as its nothing we can't manage. He's never been violent or tantrums and is so loving and kind.
But all this anxiety and stress has come as a surprise and it's like he's stuck at being a small boy while all his peers are growing up more
I just don't know what if an assessment for "something" would be a good step but he doesn't fit alot of the criteria for adhd or asd for example. I'm not sure if his school would even agree to supporting us if we went ahead as its hard enough to get them to have a meeting
He is dyslexic but would that cause all of the above.
Apologies the garbled post I just go round and round in circles with what to do
Any advice would be so welcome

Is DS Y7 or Y8?

I would start by requesting a meeting with the SENCO. Whether it is ‘just’ dyslexia, which can result in what you describe, particularly as DC move through secondary school and the academic demands increase, or something else as well, the school should be supporting DS. They must make reasonable adjustments and they must make their best endeavours to meet DS’s SEN. What support are they providing? You could consider requesting an EHCNA. On their website, IPSEA has a model letter you can use.

If you are concerned about ASD &/or ADHD, I would push for referral.

Year 8
I guess I'm worried that I'll be seen as dramatic if I push for an assessment

He gets support for his dyslexia but minimal. I have to keep at them about it and they "say" all the right things

The school needs to be providing more support. Don’t worry about being seen as pushy/dramatic/demanding. You are the only one who will advocate for DS.
