not sure if posting in right place but still

most of you will know me by now my ds was diagnosed with ASD 3 eweeks ago

anyway we had our first SNAP session on monday and it was absolutely fantastic he had a great time talking to the lady in sensory room doesnt speak at all at pre school so was a good sign

he had such a great time and i enjoyed myself not having to apologise for his actions or getting dissaproving looks when doing his own thing at group time

anyway my point manager at SNAP said i need to apply for DLA i know nothing about what i might be entitled to my social worker friend said i should also be entitled to carers allowence due to him not sleeping well at night

so could someoen tell me if they can what yopu needd to qualify for carers allowence and DLA thank you

i heard forms are really difficult so will get someoen to help me do them

SNAP have lots of courses they are running and want to sign him up so really need extra help as we can just about afford pre school fees so would pay for all his courses if we got help just wandered wehter i could get carers allowence or not

its so difficult as im so new to this its only been 3 weeks but i shall apply just hoping i am or he wont be able to attend the courses and they could really benefit him

thank you

You don't need a dx to qualify for DLA, it's based on need rather than label. Ds got his award a year and a half before dx.

ds3 doesn't have a urrent dx (long story) and gets it

the sw is completely wrong; not sleeping well affects the dla rate you get; as p[eople said ca is literally just you working and the rate you get dla

if you get refused appeal- ds3 was refused at first, same info on appeal got higher (he's now middle)

thanks everyone i will give it a go then! Got surestart advisor on hand if need help with form although i used to help other people do them (not for autism) when i used to work with CAB - so have a rough idea that you have to be very negative and worse case scenario. Thanks again

It get's back-dated to when they send the forms too!

bubblagirl · 06/06/2008 09:32

yes thank you they told me they had dated it to the day i asked apparently you can ask for it to be dated to date of diagnosis but not sure how they go about that my friend is going to deal with it for me

would it help to add additional information to his care needs as not enough space to explain everything

maybe write out examples for each area and compare it to other children his age

ive found it so sad so far reading through as itend to focus on what he can do and not what he cant do and i dont see him as too different to other children his age

but reading through i see he is very different to other children his age and not really paid much attention to that before so has given me a few tears but i just hope i can forward enough information for them to see his care needs are in fact more

and i now realise how much more i just thought i was dealing with the normal but see its not now but hey he is my gorgeous boy no matter what and if we get this i can afford to get him more help

good luck buublagirl. i perfectly undertsand the seeing them as not much different to their peers until you go into it in more detail. Just look at it as something that's going to help him and as you say he is your gorgeous boy no matter what.
