Sensory room ideas

Hi all, trying to reconfigure rooms a bit and have a little snug that I want to make into a sensory room for DD.

I'm thinking: beanbag, bubble tube, some foam mats / blocks type stuff, exercise ball. She can be very sensory seeking (climbing etc) but she can also sit for a while just spinning the same toy.

Anyone have any ideas for things that have worked well in a sensory space? Or any 'hacks' for DIY ideas (because anything on official 'sensory' type websites seems to have a price tag x10!)

Depending on how much room you have, an indoor swing (you can get some brilliant sensory swings but you can also get sets that include a swing as well as things like trapeze bar or rings, ladder, etc. which for doorways that aren’t as expensive), mini trampoline, steamroller, bodysok, bilibo, whizzy dizzy. Some people make a climbing wall.

Have you looked to see if you are eligible for any grants for sensory equipment?

Hi @flawlessflipper thanks for the ideas. Some things I've not heard of there so plenty to Google! Climbing wall could be great I'm just worried about the house falling down also with the swing, no idea how much weight the ceiling can bear...

Not in the UK so a different system but no grants available (have funding for nanny support etc but not for any 'things' that we might need). It is frustrating that the price tags seem to have been designed with the idea that people do have external funding for it though - like so much with special needs. But that's a separate rant !

Following, as im planning on making a sensory corner for my kids. Were going to bean bag, bubble/fish tube, fiber optic light possibly curtain style and those floor tiles that have the liquid that move when touched and the ones with different textures. some of the wee boards with all the different 'animal' textures on them that we'll put on the wall and a spinning chair, an infinity light mirror. We dont have loads of room atm and looking for some extra ideas.

We made a sequin wall. Buy the fabric and glue it into MDF board, then screw it into the wall.

Soft play, crash pads (IKEA sells them cheaply), ball pits, fibre optic lighting, hue lights for colour changing, fidget toys on the wall. Ball pits, AirToobs, textured floor mats, mirrored wall lights.

Our son is sleeping in his sensory room whilst we redecorate his bedroom.

Thanks for all the ideas!! She's never taken to the swivel ikea chair (got one second hand a while ago) but will see if she might in a different space.

Ikea crash pads look good. I like the look of fibre optic lighting although a bit unsure if she would put in her mouth the whole time, wil have to see with that one.

I really want to get a bubble light column but I think she would knock it over - have seen in build corners you can buy (soft play material with a hole in) and they are literally more than a grand!! So crazy these mark ups. But we are not a very 'handy' household sadly.

For the bubble light. I got some soil pipe clips, those are are used to hold the large toilet pipes to a wall. Then use long screws to screw it to the wall. One clip at topaz one at the bottom of the tube. It's rock solid. Then using a pipe of plastic tubing over the screw so it's not exposed.

Sorry for poor photos we are redecorating the room so can't take new ones -

As to the swivel chair, little one did like IKEA, but this is what they use day to day - https://share.temu.com/zZDskIr0LOB

The above has handles on it. His doesn't.

You can get brackets for the bubble tube that hold it securely to the wall
