DLA to PIP Assessment

My DS is 16 soon and we are anticipating the move from DLA to PIP. He is autistic and his disabilities are more speech and communication, mental health (hoarding, money management, OCD, anxiety) and some related to independent living. What does the assessment process involve? Do we need to get evidence from health professionals?
He will stay at home for sixth form college, however is likely to move away for university and I was wondering if he would still get PIP whilst at Uni. I am presuming that I would not get carers allowance then because obviously he would largely be away from home.

The only thing I would say is that pip has a different criteria than dla, pip is focused on what the person cant and cannot do for themselves where as dla is more what you need a parent/carer to help with your daily care. Also if your his appointee then he doesnt need to be there for an assesment and it will likely be a phone/paper based appointment. You can ask for them to use evidence from dla but you will need evidence or the system is open for abuse

People can get PIP whilst attending university. Whether you can still get carer’s allowance depends on how much care you are still providing. Even if you aren’t eligible while DS is at university, assuming you still meet the other eligibility criteria, you can claim during the weeks he is at home.

At around 15yrs7mnths (or there about) you will receive a letter informing of the upcoming change and asking if an appointee is required. Then a couple of months before 16, another letter informing of the upcoming change is sent. Then, at 16, DS, or his appointee if he has one, will be invited to claim PIP. That involves a phone call and then a form is sent. You should send any evidence, not just from HCPs, you have that support the claim. Some people have a paper based assessment, some telephone, some virtual and a minority F2F. If you had a F2F assessment, DS would have to attend as well even if you are appointee.
