Possible Aspergers

Very new to all this, my best friends child is being seen by CAMHs who have said her child possibly has Aspergers.

What should she be expecting them to do? It seems a very long process, is there anything she can do to hurry things along? She will soon have to choose a secondary school - will she receive any help on choosing what school will be best for her child?

Any advice would be welcome, she just doesn't know where to start or if she is doing enough chasing etc (I'm posting this as she doesn't have internet access).

Thank you.

They're brilliant people at that link. I used them a lot for son when we were having problems working out what to do for the best for him. They'll be able to help with what to say, and when.

I'd also talk with her local autism charities, as they often know of the best schools and worst ones, and are a source of good advice and help even if there's no formal diagnosis as yet.

If looking for a school, what I've learned from long experience is to see how lovely the head teacher is. They make or break any school. Are the pupils friendly and polite? That really shows whether they care, and caring is 90% of the battle. I've seen schools that apparently have amazing OFSTED reports for SEN, but they are total rubbish in practice.

Also get her to talk to parents whose children go to various secondaries. They'll know the truth.

Loads of excellent advice on autism here from all sorts of people, so whatever she needs to know, ask.
