My DD, who’s 6, has spent part of her summer at holiday clubs or with her old childminder (who tends to have very active days) or at home with me or DH, happily playing or helping with what we’re doing. However if she comes to the end of a task, she doesn’t know what to do next and instead she panics and cries. We have plenty of toys, a piano, a water table, a trampoline etc and she’ll reject all of those when she’s in a tizz. In some other respects she’s quite independent - wants to tie her own shoelaces, make her own snacks etc.
DS is 11 and autistic and although their presentations are very different, DH and I think she is too, although her needs are currently milder.
She has always had “big feelings” and finds it hard to regulate her emotions, but the fear of . boredom and the distress around it is new. I’ve done a visual guide to help her to choose the next toy, but moving to a prescriptive “now and next” seems like diluting her independence.
Thoughts and experience very welcome.
