My son has had umpteen development checks and I'm being sent on the Hanen course soon to help him to communicate verbally.

But ....Anyway, my son is 27 months old and he has only 3 words. Mama, Hiya and no.

The salt I saw this morning told me that he had a 'significant expressive communication deficit'. I think that's what she said. Deficit or deficiency maybe?? But she said that it would be very unusual for a child with such a significant deficit not to also have a comprehension deficit as well. Is this true? I'm sure he understands everything. He puts the batteries back into the tv remote control correctly. If I say to his older sibling, time to do your homework now, he comes running in with her school bag.

I felt like the Speech and language therapist was warning me that he won't catch up in time to start school when he's four and a half. She asked millions of questions and I answered them all. But I felt a little bit like I was saying "oh my son is really on track apart from not speaking, honestly".

Is it really that unusual for a child of 27 months to have only 3 words.

I wish it was that simple! DD2 saw SLT before she even left SCBU and has had therapy ever since - she starts school this sept!
hope your little man thrives with his SLT support greenelizabeth

You do give SLTs a hard time, Moondog, sometimes your comments are very balanced but often you seem to side with a parent who's giving you their own verbal account of something that's happened/been said and you never hesitate to say you don't think SLTs are qualified to do X/Y or Z when they are the best person to comment on the crucial area of communication skills.

I'm always very surprised TBH and makes me wonder why you'd do this? Have you worked with some very poor ones?

Good to hear you sticking up for them.

BTW have now just about left the NHS and gone private - as a direct result of all the SLT bashing on MN (not you, just generally)!

Mogwai,I don't think most s/lts know what they are doing in the field that interests me,no. (Autism and challenging behaviour).
Yes,I am always on the side of the parent as I think if we are not, what is the purpose of our work.

I love my job as an s/lt but believe we are lacking in many areasa ,which is why I am adding an MSc in ABA to my quiver. ABA has opened my eyes to a world of possibilities I did not know existed 24 months ago.
