Melatonin

Just curious if a GP would prescribe melatonin as a trial basically.

My 6 year old twins both struggle to fall asleep and head bang frequently throughout the night. I mean proper thumping the pillow every time they wake up. It can last 30+ minutes and they will hum or sing while doing it (have own rooms). They’ve done this since they were babies. One in particular has an awful mood. Wakes up angry, has frequent tantrums throughout the day and generally the whole house is walking on eggshells not to set her off.

I really need to know if her lack of sleep is causing these issues. I think this would be the easiest way to work out if a ND assessment is required or not.

Hi, I'm not completely sure but I think you may need to see a paediatrician to get melatonin prescribed. That's how we got it. It's not licensed for children I think so not something a GP would give you easily I think. It certainly has helped my DS with dropping off but not night waking. Perhaps it would be worth a conversation with GP anyway to see what they would advise/ if they could refer? Good luck.

Most GPs won’t initiate melatonin prescriptions.

You could ask for a referral though. However, some secondary services wouldn’t prescribe without the child at least being on the waiting list for further assessment.

Our GP prescribed melatonin at the same time we went on the the assessment waiting list.
