sorry if this is long but just had another useless meeting with school and feel like crying in the toilets tbh

they’re still saying my 9yo “doesn’t need an ehcp” even tho he’s had 3 exclusions, barely in class, has a diagnosis and gets taken out loads. they keep talking about “high needs funding” and “reasonable adjustments” but none of it is actually helping. i feel like they just want me to go away

i’ve started doing the ehcp request myself like some of u said (thank u) but now i’m doubting if it’s even worth it. what if they say no? what if i can’t fill it in right? what if i just make things worse?

i’m tired of fighting and no one listening. has anyone actually got one without school support? i’m trying but feel like i’m just a mum shouting into a void

any advice would be amazing xx

Request an EHCNA yourself. Use IPSEA’s model letter - you won’t do it wrong. Appeal if refused. You make things worse.

Unfortunately, some schools incorrectly tell parents their DC doesn’t need or won’t get an EHCP, but the parents go on to successfully apply themselves.

Clearly this school is NOT meeting your son's needs if he is taken out of class repeatedly and has already been excluded three times. And it is not the school's place to decide who does or doesn't get an an EHCP. That is for the LA to decide.

The LA should respond to your request within 6 weeks, so keep a note of the date you sent the application. If they refuse to carry out an EHC Needs assessment, you should appeal.

Good luck.

How are you getting on?

We had our needs assessment refused despite the evidence, but was able to overturn it by contacting the head of the relevant council department, after the case worker refused to talk to us on the phone about it. We should be heading towards the final plan soon, although it's nearly 11 months after we originally applied!

Its good to ask questions and keep asking questions until the answers come and explore options for the child.
