SN children

Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Is there such a thing as an online SN questionnaire to help point in the right direction?

Just that really.
I know there are such things for specific types of SN, but what if you don't know what it could be? Where could you start?
TIA

It probably depends - what kind of issues are you/your child experiencing and what age are they?

https://spicyminds.org/hazel is a new app which I've tried recently. This is the description:

"Hazel is an app for parents or carers that brings together a range of tools and resources for understanding neurodivergent traits all in one place. Hazel helps parents and carers gain a better understanding of what might be going on for their child and offers insights and guidance on adjustments at home and in school. "

There is a subscription for additional support but I was able to do all the tests and receive a profile for my daughter without paying anything.

I found it pretty accurate. It's not perfect (for example it highlighted a high score for ADHD whereas professional opinion is that her hyperactive traits are more likely explained by sensory seeking linked to her autism, and her lack of filter is better explained by social differences rather than impulsiveness.) but as a stating point it was pretty impressive and picked up her autistic traits (she is diagnosed autistic).

Depending on the difficulties, you could start with a referral to a community paediatrician or an educational psychologist assessment.

Thank you, that's very helpful!

I doubt it’s helpful for young children, but the AQ50 online is a screening assessment for autism. It might apply to teenagers?

You could also try typing into chat gpt about the situation e.g. her age, behvaviors, signs or concerns and ask it to consider if it is indicative of being neurodivergent, mental health or typical for child of that age and ask it to map the traits against the possible profiles to show how strongly or really they align and which profiles match strongest etc. it will potentially give a good starting point.

You could then ask follow ups e.g. does adding the trait or my descriptive of her behaviour/example change anything it said about her likely profile? can it recommend reading based on scientific evidence and also adedotal advice e.g. parent blogs etc on the condition suggested so you can learn more and see if you can any ideas or advice.
