Over a year after being referred!

She asked me some questions, then asked DS some questions, but he wasn't answering sensibly at all. He totally embarrassed me when the OT asked him about how he found getting changed for PE. He answered "I take off my clothes & everyone sees my dinky!"
Why do they have to come out with these things at such times?!!

He couldn't sit on the little chair provided without slouching & fidgeting, so hope that was picked up on.

She made him copy some simple shapes, then write numbers to 20, write the alphabet, then a short sentence.
She is going to send a report to school & myself, and feels he should be doing more on a laptop while in class.
We apparently don't go back to see her again.

DS has his speech therapy appt next week, then we go back to the pead in July, by which time I hope we have some kind of an idea of the problem. It is so hard knowing something is wrong, but not knowing exactly what it is.

We had an ot assessment last week for ds1 (AS) and he did everything beautifully!!! I have never seen such neat writing. My ds didnt answer any questions either,i'm sure they are used to that.
Is he being assessed for special needs?Hope you gat something sorted soon

I just phoned the OT dept yesterday as we have been waiting since September 2006!. The sec then told me that they concentrate on assessing kids at transition times ie. just before starting school and just befire goimg to high school, DS2 was refered just AFTER starting school so that means they could leave him 6 years before assessing him! Am looking into private assessments.

Tclanger - have you tried giving him a blob of blu-tack to fiddle with? It's a cheap low tech option which is sometimes worth a go before you fork out for seating stuff... sorry if eggs and sucking spring immediately to mind - new round here!

Is it normal to only have one session with the OT? This was the thing I felt DS really needed.

T-Clanger, I have one of the wedge shape knobbly cushions ( blow - up rather than gel filled), it is just lying around the house as DS2 doesn't use it any more , if you would like it i could deflate it and post it to you.

Hi PC, DS1 was assessed 3 mths ago. He performed well for the OT but was like your son, very fidgety. He was seen at a health centre and then they went to see him in school. Nothing has been picked up, just some suggestions on how to help him hold a pencil properly (problem with fine motor skills). When they had seen him in school they sent me a copy of their report and a sensory perception questionaire to fill in.
As i say they didnt pick up on any problems so we dont need to see them again though I have a friend whose DS has dyspraxia and they dont see OT either.
PS I can't beleive how long some of the mums on here have to wait for appointments with OTs and SALTs, I feel very lucky that where I live the wait isnt too long.
