Help me decide what to do about school trip

DS is in mainstream school at the moment still doing reduced timetable. He doesn't (IMO) need to be part time anymore but school disagree. He has EHCP and 1:1 but for some reason are claiming it would be too much..
That isn't what I'm angry about. Reception have school trip planned for next month. Headteacher called me today (unfortunately I missed his call so got a voicemail) saying DS can only attend if I attend too. Well I kind of accept that but I have to drive him to and from the trip incase he gets overwhelmed and needs to leave early. I also need to pay for my entry fee, plus petrol and the school are charging me the same as other parents even though that includes the cost of the coach, which they won't let him use.
They have obviously said I have the choice to bring him in to school instead. But he won't have a 1:1 he knows then as he'll be placed with Y1.
He's non verbal and still in nappies can't cope with a lot of noise and likes to have a space he can go to. That isn't going to happen in Y1 class (so God knows what will happen in September).
I personally think he would be fine on the trip as he did them in nursery but school say no. If it was a case of me going with him on the coach I would do but I don't want to drive somewhere I don't know which is going to be over an hour away from home.
I can't help but think school aren't being very helpful or inclusive. I'm very close to just saying I'll keep him home that day. Do you think this is the best option? Or should I ask them to reconsider letting him go on the coach with me (although as he has a 1:1 I'm not sure why I need to go).
I just feel it's another thing I have to fight for and it feels neverending.

If you want DS to attend school full-time, he can, unless the school is formally suspending DS. You don’t have to accept the school unlawfully excluding DS.

The school is discriminating against DS. Have they informed you in writing? If not, get them put it in writing. I would remind the school they must make reasonable adjustments. Also remind them the supporting children with medical conditions statutory guidance states pupils should not be prevented from participating in school trips, nor should unnecessary barriers to participation be created. And that includes requiring parents to accompany them.

If you want DS to remain in school, if 1:1 is detailed, specified and quantified in the EHCP, remind them the provision in the EHCP isn’t optional, and failing to provide the provision leaves them and the LA open to legal action. (The same applies when DS moves to Y1 in September.)

Do you want DS to remain in this school?

Not in the long term. I really wanted him at a SEN school from last September but his EHCP didn't come through in time. His EHCP is supposed to be reviewed this summer and I'm hoping they will agree that he needs a special school.
When he started school they were very supportive but this seems to have lessened a lot in the last few months.
I can't get their reasoning for me having to take him to and from the trip myself. He's had days out before (obviously not with school) and he has a 1:1 so I don't know why I need to be there.
DH said keep him at home but why should he have to miss out? Think I need to speak to school tomorrow.

If SS was your preference, did you appeal when the EHCP was finalised?

If the review isn’t going to be soon, I would request an early review rather than wait.

LoveFridaynight · 06/05/2025 20:51

We did appeal but it was rejected
Review is September but we're going to request it for the summer. I've emailed them today so hopefully will hear back soon.
Current school are at least on board with this as he won't cope in Y1, their current suggestion is for him to redo reception if he doesn't get in to SS.

Are you sure you formally appealed to SENDIST?

LoveFridaynight · 07/05/2025 07:11

I think he was rejected due to only being 4 that seemed to be what they said.
So, is the school allowed to insist I take DSon the trip. Or should I push back? HT said obviously white you're there you'll go round with the school but why ? I'm paying for us to go and paying entry and attending anyway. I know they will say it's incase DS can't cope and suspect they may phone me to pick him up just to prove a point.
DS won't actually know if he's missed out or not (his understanding isn't there yet) but I feel that's beside the point. I know and if you can't tell I'm majorly pissed off by it. In fact the more I think about it the more angry I get.

Yes, I would be challenging the school using the information in my first post.

Are you sure you appealed to SENDIST? They wouldn’t say DS had to attend MS just because he was 4 and if the EHCP wasn’t finalised by September the timings are short even if you had an expedited hearing. Are you sure it wasn’t the LA who said that? They often misinform parents.

BusMumsHoliday · 07/05/2025 13:48

I would do exactly as @StrivingForSleep has suggested. I'm appalled but sadly not surprised that the school is treating you like this.

Unfortunately, I think the school has discovered that they can do what's easiest for them even when it's unlawful and so far you've got along with it because you're trying to support your child and work with them. I'm not blaming you for that but I would start to be a bit more difficult.

If your child has a specified number of hours 1:1 in his EHCP but he's not being allowed to attend for those hours, I would give the Senco and Head one email to say he'll be attending full time as of Monday as is his right, and then if they protest, tell the LA the school aren't providing what they are getting funding for.

I hope you get the special school placement you want.
