DS5 won’t wear clothes!

DS5 (soon to be 6), will no longer get dressed. He has spent the whole day naked, in the garden. This is not a one off, it started in the Easter holidays. This is fine(ish) as it’s Saturday and I was ok to let him have a chilled day with no pressure. But it was all last weekend too, so we can’t do anything as a family at the weekend. He has been late to school 3/4 days this week due the distress his clothes cause him. The school don’t even make him wear uniform these are his own clothes. He eventually found items that felt really right, but there are no reliably ‘safe’ items. One day one top will be fine and the other day the exact same top will not be.

Nothing in life has changed so I’m at a loss as to why suddenly got so bad. He’s always been very restricted with his closing, but we could usually rely on a few key items.

l he’s not diagnosed with anything although we are seeking a diagnosis.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

How are DS’s anxiety and stress levels? Anxiety and stress can exacerbate sensory difficulties. If DC is already overwhelmed/, this can heighten the response to sensory stimuli.

Has DS had a sensory OT assessment? Is he receiving any support for sensory needs?

Would DS wear a dressing gown or similar or an oversized hoody?

Have you tried seamless and seamfree clothes?

Has he grown so the previously safe clothes fit differently? Have you tried clothes in the next size up or even 2 sizes up?

Didn’t see JBrumours reply. Anxious now it was a hard hearted one but that may be as I am so on edge at the moment with it all.

We’ve never been taken seriously when we’ve raised our difficulties. Not until recently when it’s been affecting attendance has the school listened to us. he hasn’t seen anyone yet, but we have an appointment set up with a private occupational therapist and as I mentioned in the OP, we are waiting for an adhd & asd assessment.

But, I have researched it a lot and tried to help with a variety of things: vestibular swing set up, lots of proprioception input in the form of crashing/bashing sort of soft play at home, deep pressure by wrapping up in blankets etc, lots of tickling which he loves: squashmallows for times of anxiety etc etc, a darkened den to soothe.

I’ve spent hundreds of pounds on seamless socks, pants, compression t shirts etc etc and they nearly all get rejected. He likes things really tight, arms not too long, neckline snug etc etc. I feel a bit hopeless. Won’t wear hoodies or dressing gowns etc. I have a ‘body sock’ on order too to see if this helps. On a Monday he will wear said t shirt. On a Tuesday, he’ll rage and cry because it doesn’t feel right.

We have a calm and loving home, he enjoys school when he is there, has good friends and gets lots of exercise, eats good food. But yet he is on edge, so volatile. Can be happy and laughing at one moment and spitting with rage the next.

Sorry I’m rambling!

Is the OT someone with sensory integration experience/qualifications/training?

Ignore the deleted poster; it was an ignorant post.
