Flying EasyJet with a (child's) wheelchair

Hi, I hope this is the right forum for this - at the top it says children with learning disabilities but I can't find anywhere for physical disabilities.

Anyway, my question: Has anybody flown easyJet with a child in a wheelchair and can tell me what happens to the wheelchair after you hand it in at the gate? Will we get it back when we get off the plane? It's a manual wheelchair so no batteries to worry about.

Context: My daughter is disabled and next month we'll be flying with easyJet for the first time since getting her wheelchair. Previously we've kept the pushchair until the gate then after landing I've had to carry her off the plane and all the way through security until we could get the pushchair back from baggage reclaim. She's 3 now though and getting too heavy to carry that far, plus I will be about 20 weeks pregnant so definitely not up to carrying her for ages! Her dad could carry her but then I have to carry all three of our bags, which isn't ideal either. Plus she's really too heavy for him to carry that far, especially if we end up queuing for ages at security! She can't walk at all and it's obviously neither practical nor safe for her to crawl all the way through the airport! We don't even really need special assistance as such (although we will contact them, I just wanted to find out about experiences first) - we can carry her on and off the plane no problem. Literally all we need is for them to give us her wheelchair back and not take it to baggage reclaim!

You are in the right place. Despite what it says at the top, the board isn’t just for learning disabilities.

I put a laminated note on the wheelchair/SN buggy (DS1 prefers his SN buggy) saying handle with care, please return to door and name/mobile number. Unfortunately, on a couple of occassions it hasn’t work. I would also speak to the airline.

Thank you @StrivingForSleep We will definitely contact the airline as well but it's good to know it can work.

I’ve flown with easyJet with my son who uses a wheelchair many times. We book assistance through easyJet, they take you to the plane usually before everyone else, he stays in his wheelchair up to the plane door and then they put the wheelchair in the hold.

I tend to take the wheelchair cushion off and bring into the plane with me as it’s only attached by Velcro so I’m never confident that it won’t get lost. I also do the straps up before it goes in the hold so they’re less likely to get broken.

After landing we stay on the plane whilst everyone else gets off, they get the wheelchair out of the hold and bring it to the airplane door.
