Last week dd had a test at the nursery.

its called the "Renfrew picture action" or something like that.

That day she came home saying "this is my angry face and this is my happy face£" etc, and i said to DH she,s had a test/asessment done im sure.

Then on monday the LEA sent me by email late evidence for the tribunal and this was included, i dont know who carried out this asessment on her, but its dated for 7 may lastweds, but we didnt sign anything saying the ed psych could test her until 3.20pm on that day.

she was taken off the ICAN programme last october as her speech was too good for their work that they do with kids, so i dont know if it was them or not.

TIA

It's a test of expressive language. Stuff like looking at pictures and describing what they see - the better the expression of language (and the higher the awareness of the need to explain thoughts better for your listener), the better the score.

The happy face/ angry face thing sounds like they've been doing some ASD screening type stuff - similar to some of the ADOS questions.

moondog · 14/05/2008 19:26

Yes, Renfrew Action Picture Test is quite widely used. Child asks to describe some pictures. No, the happy/sad stuff is not part of it.

jenk1 · 14/05/2008 22:24

would it be carried out by a SALT or could the normal nursery staff carry it out.

the test is not signed and doesnt say who carried it out, it just gives her score, we were not told that she would be having the test.

oh im sick of the lot of them they are really getting me down with all this underhand stuff.

Jenk,it shouldn't be carried out by anyone but SALT and even then it should be dated with name of tester displayed. So sorry for the stress you are under.
I have experienced similar hassle as a parent and it grieves me greatly that something in the world of SN has gone so sickeniningly wroing that the people who are supposed to help ease the pressure, actually make it worse.
Please let me know if I can be of any assistance.
Rooting for you.

thanks for your support moondog

you wouldnt believe what has gone on in the last week at her nursrey, from pictures of her at the top of a climbing frame with a caption "dd shouting look at me", with no staff around, she has hemiplegia and they have never accepted her difficulties, she doesnt tell them when she,s tired and they actually sent the pictures to the SEN dept without our permission, that is breach of confidentiality and im not sure what i can do about that.

last week she told us a lady had been doing angry, happy and sad faces with her and now it seems a SALT has gone in and done some asessment without informing us and has sent the info to the SEN manager without us seeing it first.

they are making such a dogs dinner of this tribunal.

i phoned the SEN manager today and told her that we consider her actions "very serious", she raised her voice to me and told me I ASKED FOR THE INFO/PICTURES, YOU ASKED FOR THIS TRIBUNAL AND WE HAVE A RIGHT TO GATHER ADDITIONAL EVIDENCE.

Yes,I've read your threads.Jesus H. Christ.
I trust it you have support from SNAP or IPSEA or someone else.

moondog · 14/05/2008 23:06

I would put in a complaint about her rudeness too.
Prove that you are not to be f**ed with. When they know that, they often tend to give up and give in, so as always, the few assertive parents get what they want while the timid masses put up and shut up.

jenk1 · 14/05/2008 23:18

yes we have an IPSEA lady whos (hopefully) coming to the tribunal next week.

we have a complaint at the moment about the nursery putting dd into education from 9-3 and charging us for a daycare place.
its the SEN managers boss who is investigating it, we had the one in jan about the forced toileting issue but nothing gets resolved.

im not sure who to complain to cos he,s the exec director of the council.

You complain to Ombudsman.#
Ring and ask for their leaflet on complaints (that will freak 'em)]
Explains it all.Vital that you follow protocol.

I really believe that the only way to change anything is to bompard Health Trusts with constant formal complaints. No point doing anything at a lower level.Christie, she is probably too scared to come-you always sounds on the ball!

Yes,I am familiAR with untruths like that.
(Do you er...encourage the parents to ask her for an account of how often she visits?)

jenk1 · 15/05/2008 14:50

dd is supposed to be being "monitored" by SALT, she hasnt been seen by one AFAIK for over a year now, well she probably was last week by one who carried out the test.

moondog,

on the test it just gives her scores against what children of her age should be attaining, and thats it, no name not signed and it doesnt give much detail, ive emailed the headteacher and asked for a copy of the evidence supporting the test and im going in to see her in a bit, is there anything else i should ask for?

TIA

jenk - if they have assessed expressive language I wonder if they have assessed receptive language at the same time?

jenk1 · 15/05/2008 16:03

i dont think i remember seeing it this is what it says.

Renfrew Picture Action Test.

DD Mean Range

Information 30.5 27 23-30

Grammar 22 20 14-23

and thats it, i dont really understand what it means, its not signed and doesnt say who carried it out thats all thats on the sheet.

OP posts:
jenk1 · 15/05/2008 16:12

thats not come out very well.

dd scored on information 30.5
Grammar was 22

Mean is information 27
Grammar is 20

Range is information 23-30
Grammar is 14-23.

its absolute rubbish, she,s just had last month an asessment from an independent ed psych who said she does have a Speech and Language problem and she needs help with it, he did something called a Lowe and Costello symbolic play test and she did it in silence, his report says there is complete absence of any imaginary play.
He said her language makes an accurate testing of her intellectual aptitude completely unreliable.

OP posts:
TotalChaos · 15/05/2008 16:58

Just wondering whether there might be a test of receptive language they have done that doesn't look so good iyswim that they haven't disclosed to you/tribunal. I agree that a test of expressive language in response to visual stimuli doesn't mean no language problems - as it's not dealing with the semantic/pragmatic aspects of speech and language in terms of conversation, social skills, ability to respond to others.

moondog · 15/05/2008 17:32

Symbolic Paly Test is good for non verbal children and easy to administer.
I haven't got my RAPT to hand but can check scores for you tomorrow.

Stnadard tests for reception might be something like Reynell. TROG or CELF or Derbyshire Rapid Screening Test depending on her level of language.

I obviously don't know her so cannot say which would be most suitable.

Perfectly reasonable to have them explain test and scores to yuo though!
