I’ve been advised to claim DLA for my 20 month old little boy by his nursery.

He is suspected ASD and significantly developmentally delayed. He has massive sensory issues which mean all he eats is dry cereal and regular vomits when he sees others eating or smells food cooking. He is completely non verbal and non understanding. He doesn’t even understand familiar words used daily like “milk” “bedtime” “bath time” and doesn’t respond to his favourite toys by name unless he sees them. He also demonstrates no understanding of instructions when spent . His developmental age is between 6 and 8 months old. He also doesn’t sleep for longer than 3-5 hours at night (in total) and displays lots of sensory seeking behaviours in bed that make him a danger to himself (climbing, headbanging, bouncing). He is also uncomfortable and pulling at his nappy as soon as it is wet so needs changing 10-12 times a day. He is under the epilepsy nurses for suspected absense seizures and has been referred to a neurologist too. Health visitor knows all about his behaviour and is on board.

im just a little nervous because hes so young and i understand lots of young children need lots of care and supervision.

can i hear your experiences of DLA with under twos please.

thanks for reading and hopefully responding 🩵

It is possible to get the care component of DLA for under 2s. It is about care in excess of what is typically expected for DC the same age, so as long as you have evidence of that, you should apply. The Cerebra guide is helpful when completing the form.
