My DS is 6 and has selective mutism and a phonological speech disorder.

He is currently seeing a clinical psychologist but one that normally deals with verbal children so I am a bit apprehensive that DS has been placed with the right person to help him.

In a meeting recently the CP said after 4 sesions DS has'nt talked to him and wondered if he would be better suited to art therapy.

Has anyone ever had any experience with art therapy sessions?

If the CP knew the basics of SM surely he would know that 4 sesions is nothing in dealing with a child with SM and it is a long process that requires patience and understanding of the condition.

Neither of which I feel he has.

DS does seemto like him though and looks forward to the sessions so I think we should percivere.

It just fels this CP has given up all ready and wants to pass the buck to another department which would mean yet another person for my DS to get used to when he ahs seen so many different professionals already.

Makes me wonder why this paticular CP was given my sons case to deal with when he is used to dealing with verbal children.

Any experience of this would be appreciated.

Signofthetimes SLTs often deal with Selective Mutism. You can self-refer. Needs to be a specialist.
