Apologies if my title is a a silly statement, my 8yr old son had his assessment yesterday and had been diagnosed with ADHD.
What do I do now? Obviously when the report comes through I will give a copy to the school. Should I then organise a meeting with the SENCO? Do I need to contact the GP to discuss medication? Do I need to let his extra curricular activities know too?
Very new to this!

Hi, my daughter was just diagnosed a couple of weeks ago. The nurse emailed me some information and told me to have a think about if we wanted to try medication (which I replied to say we do). I then got another email with information about the medication they think would be best for her. I contacted the school to let them know. I'm just waiting on an appointment now for the clinic to get her started on the medication as they need her weight, BP etc. Medication is managed by the ADHD nurse with paediatrician input not GP.

I'm in Scotland so it possibly works differently here. I'm not sure what a senco does so possibly not a role that exists in the same way. It's probably a good idea to let them know though if that's how you get extra support at school.

Hopefully you get more advice from someone who is further along in the process!

Support in schools is based on needs, not diagnosis. If you think DS needs more support in school, request a meeting with the SENCO, but support won’t be given just because DS has a diagnosis.

GPs don’t initiate ADHD medication. You need to talk to whoever diagnosed him if that is something you are interested in.

Personally, I would let extra-curricular activities know.
