What age would you do it? Child has a SN plan at school, family history and has had signs since pre-school. They are currently Y2 and turned 7 in September.

Eyesight and hearing tests all clear.

Will a diagnosis help with school is it just a yes or no, or is there a full report with helpful advice?

Support in schools is based on needs, not diagnosis, so a diagnosis alone won’t result in additional support.

What type of report you get and how in-depth it is depends on the type of assessment you commission. For example, a good full comprehensive educational psychologist assessment will be far more in depth rather than a report from a dyslexia assessor.

I would seek an assessment from an educational psychologist now if you suspect DC has unmet needs.

So you would go educational psychologist over teacher?

School support is intermittent, currently in place but the SENCO isn’t very supportive and a change of class teacher due in September.

I don’t know what’s best to do for DC (or my bank account!)

Personally, I would go with an ed psych. A good EP assessment will look at needs and provision required in a more comprehensive way. Although it will be more expensive.

Request a meeting with the SENCO. The school needs to be providing support.
