I am going on this course soon. The book that goes with it cost ?46 ouch!! My son needs help though. He is two and can't talk a WORD. Nothing. All his communication is non-verbal.

Has anybody been on this course? Did it help them to help their child communicate verbally?

Thanks Moondog. I have just read that thread. Something the speach therapist said at the orientation makes more sense now. She said 'at first everybody hates the videos, but then they end up being everybody's favourite part of the course' and I thought 'huh?' why would anybody hate watching a video?

My son currently communicates with nods, points, grunts, tantrums! I thought the purpose of this particular course was to encourage them to communicate with words I know there are about 4 other Hanen Programs though. I can't wait to start it now.

Hi, I have 4yr old twins; they had Hanen speech therapy when they were two. They spoke very few words and use more non-verbal communication to get what they wanted.

I attended most of the sessions by myself (hubby couldn't get out of work) and found it strange with not taking the children with me for the therapy but we did find it useful in helping moving their speech problems forward. I just felt at times it was slightly hard, as I thought it was something I was doing wrong.

Our SALT provided the books for us to use throughout the treatment - what about asking at your local library if they can get any of the books in?

It did bring along their speech well, although we still have speech issues i.e. now we are dealing with stuttering and prounciation...good luck.

Thanks Walf, although I heard a lot of encouraging things at the orientation, the ST also told me that it is now too late for my son to be speaking normally by school intake sep 09. She didn't put it exactly like that, but that was the crux of it. For some reason that still came as a bit of a shock. I'm digesting that piece of info now. I suppose I had been thinking that it would all pan out well eventually. I'm excited though and can't wait to start helping him.

I will ask at the library about that book.

Sorry to crash the thread but is the "it takes two to talk" book worth the sixty odd quid it is second hand on Amazon???

dd is not verbal, has hypotonia affecting speech. She has a few signs, but very little understandable language, just ca (cat) caa (caa) and goh (door) doh (dog).I dunno if it is worth me getting this book.

Any suggestions/experiences welcome thanks xx

Just to add my two bits worth - we did the course when DS was just 2. Very very worthwhile, mostly because of what it taught me. The book is good too (I borrowed it from SALT) but the course definitely worth going on. DS is now 4 and still having speech issues but we're slowly getting there...

Riven, after the first session (4/6) I will let you know whether or not there are any parents of children with CP on the course. I'm sure we'll all have to introduce ourselves, wear name badges and say what he hope to help our children with.......

I'm sure somebody else could tell you before then though whether or not it would be relevant to your dd.

I'd start kicking up a fuss Riven. Plkenty can be done for non verbal people. It's the focus of 90% of my work.

TotalChaos · 11/05/2008 19:37

Riven - if that's a serious question about the course, I think it would be of very little use for your DD, it really doesn't deal at all with physical issues for lack of speech.

Elizabeth -SALT department should be able to loan you a copy, even if it's for duration of the course. Otherwise look on ebay for a copy, or Winslow publications - Winslow publications have it brand new for £29.75 plus about £4 postage! www.winslow-press.co.uk/cgi-bin/Winslow.storefront

TotalChaos · 11/05/2008 19:59

wires crossed - think I misunderstood your post.

Ilovehousemusic · 11/05/2008 22:09

I would have to say it would have been useful when dd was 3 but we didn't do it until she was 5 and by then she had quite a few words.
