No words at 30 months

morning everyone. I’ve been spending weeks just worrying about this and whilst my husband says to trust the process, it doesn’t help me stop worrying. My little one is 30 months old, has great non-verbal understanding however has not said his first word yet. Although he does babble, this is not consistent.

He was born six weeks premature, however I do understand they catch up when they are around two. He’s had his hearing tested, grommets inserted about a year ago and is currently in speech therapy. The speech therapist has said that he is making slow but good progress and believes he has language delay.

Has anyone else been in the same situation before so I can put my mind slightly more at ease?

He is also on the waiting list for an autism assessment which was triggered by concerns from Nursery regarding his speech delay and occasional stimming.

Hi - babbling a lot more, however, no words as yet. We’re working with a speech therapist and nursery are working with him too. Have started the initial stages of the autism assessment however due to his age it’s probably still too early

I can’t give any expert advice unfortunately but I just wanted to say that, anecdotal as it is, I do know multiple people who were not speaking by three and in some cases four, one significantly older than that even…and they are all speaking absolutely normally, with all of them things resolved quite quickly. I know it isn’t always the case but it can be. Are one or two of them neurodiverse? In one case, yes definitely but also doing really well. In one case, I strongly suspect but remains as adult undiagnosed. Others, not that I know of. All really bright actually.

My DP certainly had not uttered a word by his third birthday. I only recently discovered that. I think it should have been looked into, but back then it wasn’t.

It’s so hard in these early years, isn’t it? So many things that you don’t know what if anything they might mean or how they will turn out. Actually I shouldn’t kid myself, those worries probably continue beyond the early years!
