Can SALT help with social/communication issues with AS ??

My DD is 5 and was dxd with AS in september last year.

She constantly asks the same questions that she already know the answers to.

She also answers questions out of context, and will switch and change the conversation, to suit herself.

We are currently 4 weeks into a 6 week wait to see if the LEA will assess her for a statement. Will the LEA get a SALT in to assess her communication skills as part of the assessment process?.

Have any of you managed to get SALT for your child and has it helped?.

SALT was recommended in the ADOS report that J got, for social skills purposes. He'd already been assessed by a SALT pre-dx for his pronunciation but it was decided that he was within normal limits. However, now that he's diagnosed, I'm pretty sure that we will be seen eventually. The psych at CAMHS says that it can be pretty helpful but that sometimes they can get it right in the group but can't transfer it to real life. Still, worth a try.

They probably won't use SALT for statement assessment because she's not under SALT yet. We self-referred to SALT this time but got GP to refer first time. Not much of a wait first time round - only about 6 weeks between referral and assessment.

Yup.
A year ago I would have said HELL NOOOOOOOOOOOO! Because all the SALTs we'd had until then had been shite at dealing with kids with autism!

But now we've got a specialist and she's fab! She really understands kids with asd, and the difference between their asd related communication problems and the mainstream speech problems some children need help with, iyswim.

My ds's SALT wrote a lengthy report for his assessment. I'm not sure whether the LEA had actually asked for her input or not, but she wrote a cracking report on how his social and communication difficulties had a big impact on the way he behaved in the class and playground. The more evidence that you can get regarding your dd's difficulties the better.

Thanks for you replys .

She was seen by a SALT when she was assessed for a ASD, but like your DS givemesleep she was seen to be within normal limits.

Hecate - is the SALT the your DS see a private or NHS. I dont live far from you, so if you could recommend her.

Does anyone know if i could request for DD to be seen by a SALT as part of her SEN assessment?

Do you live close to me? oooh, where?
Not private, she's through the school. If you want to email me on mud24 at hotmail dot co dot uk I could give you some info.
We raised issue of SALT on our kids statements and it's on there. They go into the school, been to the house once during hols too. To drop off more work and see how they're doing.

I live in Sheffield - so not to far, but differant county and LEA, so i dont think we would come under the same SALT service.

Here's a wonderful blog autismgames.blogspot.com by a speech therapist based in the US, and her website www.autismgames.org
for anyone looking for ideas

I agree with Hecate - you need a specialist. Our PCT SALT is worse than useless, but I've also found an amazing one with tons of ASD experience. They are worth their weight in gold.

Hi, I'm in Sheffield, and have a DS with ASD, he was seen by a SALT as part of the statutory assessment. I'm a bit paranoid about posting about my experiences with the LEA on here, but CAT me if you have any queries!

twocutedarlings · 01/05/2008 21:09

Homsa - id love to chat about your experiances with our LEA, i dont have CAT but can you email me sneakyfoxswiper @ yahoo . co . uk (without the spaces LOL).
