SN children

Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Did anyone use any private tests to help determine child condition (alongside asd)?

Hi

I have a 3yo non verbal child who has suffered severe speech regression…we are on the waiting list for asd assessment and SALT

howveer recently I have noticed a few extra things - my son isn’t able to throw things like a ball or blow bubbles or jump

I don’t know if it is by choice or if there is something else going on… he does have BUPA health cover and I am thinking of calling them but I don’t know who we would need to be seen by at all ? Dos anyone have any similar experiences ??

I’d go and see your GP and ask them how best to do it. They will have experience of who to see and be very used to referring to private practice.

I would look at a paed and OT. Potentially physio too.

Does DS have an EHCP? If so, therapies such as SALT can be included in there without the need to sit on the normal waiting lists. If not, you should request an EHCNA.

Thanks I don’t have ECHP yet - originally nursery advised I wait until he has an official diagnosis and I can now see that was wrong advice. I have a meeting with SEN coming up and will be applying for ECHP once I break up this weekend from work
I know the spectrum is broad but has anyone ever come across any child with issues such as throwing or a regression almost in fine motor skills ( he was able to do this before )

Such a regression can happen, yes. Speech regression is more commonly discussed but other forms of regression can happen too.

I had to go private to have anyone take me seriously. The first few times I brought it up with the GP that I thought he needed genetic testing I had an appointment where I raised my concerns and they downplayed it (and only after I found out the person I had met with was not a GP but one of those assistant nurse practitioner type of people)

I finally went private, raised my concerns and got the referral to local pediatrician, who I then asked to order a full genetic panel be done and bingo I was right, he was diagnosed with an ultra rare micro deletion syndrome.
