Social communication clinic experience

Hi,

my little boy is 3 (4 in March) and was a real late talker, he only started saying words at 3years 3months. Nursery had raised other concerns at about 2years 6 months and he was eventually referred to the child development centre.

We got a private SALT and he has been seeing her for over a year whilst he is still on the waitlist for NHS SALT. He had his initial appointment with the CDC in April and they said they would see him again in 6 months so we have been waiting anyway I received a letter a few weeks ago for his next appointment at the CDC and the clinic name is “social communication clinic” I didn’t take much notice of that at the time but I mentioned it to his portage lady and she asked what clinic it was for so I told her and she said something about it being for autism diagnosis. This shocked me a little bit as although I am very aware that there is a high possibility that he is autistic (it is still very confusing as there are lots of traits that are not consistent with autism) she said something about a diagnosis on the day? I didn’t ask her anymore about it as I felt a bit blindsided and didn’t want to burst into tears there and then as I do find it a very emotional.

Essentially I am asking for other experiences- is it usual for you to get a diagnosis from them on the day? I would like to prepare myself as much as possible so I know what to expect. TIA

Whether you get a diagnosis (or not, as is sometimes the case) on the day or not depends on where you live. And sometimes even within an area, it can differ.
