HI,I have been claiming child tax credit for 6 years but not working tax credit as my husband works and we are not eligible.

I have been recieving DLA and carers allowance for my DS since 2005.

Someone has told me I should have been declaring the carers allowance and may have got extra credit tax within a disibility element.
I was unaware of this .

Does anyone know if claims can be back dated and how far back as it seems I may have been missing out on extra help.

Thanks in advance

Someone tod me I should have been del

You need tio declare the carers and DLA- carers actually counts as a taxable income but the DLA gets you a premium.

We got our DLA backdated because althoughw etold them they hadnt recorded it, don't know if they will abckdate otherwise? you certain you didnt write to tell thema nd the letter got lost, LOL

(Wouldn't actually advise that btw- not worth the hassle)

telephonen them and ask, they haev a helpline number

Hi Peachy,it's all a bit confusing,I did'nt realise this as I thought it was the same as family allowance etc which oyu don't need to declare.

So do I need to give them a figure for the carers and the DLA I recieve or just the carers as that is taxable?

I doubt they would backdate it to 2005.

its just the carers thats classed as income

dla is for your child but the rate you get affects how much tax credits you get iykwim

My son recieves the meduium rate for DLA.

Not sure how this will effect our claim.

I had no idea 3 years ago until it came up in conversation that I could claim DLA after my DS was dx .

No one seems to tell you these things.

sunflowervalley · 29/04/2008 13:50

Will give them a call and see what I can find out.

I expect I will be on hold for quite some time listening to some awful music on the other end

Hey i am in same position, just received dla high rate for my ds1, but not received letter yet, but was told over phone was high rate...so can i claim for carers allowance too now? Does it take as long as dla for decision? And wat do i do bout tax credits? xxx

TheodoresMummy · 30/04/2008 21:02

I phoned the benefits office today to request DLA forms.

Very nice man told me that if I get middle or higher rate then I may be entitled to carer's allowance and increase in child tax credits. He said that if we were awarded either middle or higher rate then basically to phone them again and they would make sure I knew what else I might be entitled to and send appropriate forms.

And I haven't even got the forms yet !!

Why do peoples' experiences with various agencies differ so much, I wonder ?

We just get Child tax credit and the disabled child premium we recieved as a result of being awarded middle rate DLA was pretty huge in comparison to what we were getting. We're waiting for the IR to get their arses in gear for this year's tax credit award, though (they f* this up every year and how hard is it for them to pay directly into a bank account, FFS?) and I've recently been awarded carer's allowance. I spoke to someone with a husband in a similar type of job and presumably a similar family income, recently who said that the carer's allowance ate up most of that premium, so we're waiting to see how it turns out.

oiFoiF · 01/05/2008 10:27

you can get carers yes caitlinjacksmummy

do you only get carers allowance if you earn less than a certain amount a week.

our paedatrician told us yesterday at last that we r entitled to dla and should claim it.

PeachyHas4BoysAndLovesIt · 01/05/2008 18:27

CA is based onwhethere there is someone at home- a partners income is irrelevant but if yiou work or study there are strict criteria.

PeachyHas4BoysAndLovesIt · 01/05/2008 18:28

ourvye that varies

a friend found that the ca was effectively reduced to £10 per week with the reductions

twocutedarlings · 01/05/2008 18:54

This is a good website. If you enter all you details with the CA and without it, you will work out weather or not its worth you claiming CA.

Well I rang and it seems I could have been claiming since 2005 but was unawre of this.

They said they would backdate for the last tax year but not any further.

Nice surprise, will be able to take the children on a little holiday now.

Just made me think how many other people out there don't realsie what they are entitled to and have been struggling like we have.
