...what can I expect? Anyone else been through it? We have to be at the hospital at 8.30am (St.George's Tooting) and that is about all I know (no food after midnight the night before and no drink after 6am (nightmare!!))

Grateful for anything anyone can add.

Many Thanks

Merlot, good luck love. DD had an MRI about six months ago. I have to say the care was excellent. Lots of quite involved pre-care and checks. We had to wait whilst the MRI was going on which I found quite hard. But DD was fine afterwards and really recovered very quickly. I was very relieved as she was very upset and shaky after the GA she had for grommets. The no food/drink thing is very tricky. We drove DD around to keep her happy as food and drink are her big thing. Thinking of you...

No experience, merlot, just wanted to add my good wishes to this thread. I know you won't really feel any better 'til it's all over.

maddiemo · 10/01/2005 21:01

No experience Merlot. we were offered one but decided not to go ahead. Hope all goes well with the MRI scan. Will think of ds.

Hi Merlot - dd had an MRI under GA when she was about 20 months. I think everyone has just about covered everything but just to reiterate that she recovered really well from the GA and coped with the whole thing brilliantly. It really is more traumatic for you than them I think.

As for staying with them... I guess every hospital is different but you should be able to stay as long as you want to with such a little one. We decided to stay until she was under the GA, then went and had lunch to get away from the hospital and thinking about it all (not sure that ws a good idea as spent the whole time feeling sick and looking at my watch), but made sure we were back before she came round.

Good luck for tomorrow Mulsey.

FineFigureFio · 11/01/2005 06:48

Hope it all goes well mulsey, let us know what happens xxx Have you got any further with a diagnosis for your dd? i remember she seems very similar to my dd but is a bit younger? We are having to have a repeat mri aswell as old hospital wont forward on original CT scan or results, bloody annoying but at least we know it will all be accounted for. Have they done the Retts test yet?

What lovely support you all give on this board

Your advice and pointers have made me feel so much more reassured about the whole thing, but Marthamoo you're right, I wont feel ok about it until its over and then there are the results....

Ds has his MRI on Monday, so a few more days to wait, but now feel so much more prepared thanks to you lot .

My thoughts are with you today Mulsey. Hope it goes well, let us know how it went.

I don't mean to be dippy but why do the children need MRI, what do they look for? Is it brain problems?

heartinthecountry · 11/01/2005 14:38

Plainflum - all the children we are talking about here have some kind of special needs, so yes, the MRI scan will be looking at their brains. it will basically build up a 3D picture of their brain so that the neurologists can see if there are any abnormalities. This can help with getting a diagnosis.

coppertop · 11/01/2005 14:41

Good luck, Mulsey and Merlot.

maddiemo · 11/01/2005 16:50

Hope it went well Mulsey.

We go through MRIs for both our kids VOLUNTARILY once every year. We agreed to be part of a study into prem babies which my two were. They are heavily sedated and its horrible but I felt we needed to give something back to the hospital where they were born and we get loads of information as to how they are progressing including brain photos for the album (yuch) Hope it all goes well!

Merlot · 11/01/2005 22:18

Wow, that puts it into perspective Motheroftwins.

What a lovely altruistic thing to do

Hope your prem twins are thriving now

My ds had a mri scan today and he is now 12 weeks old, they gave him a light sedation but we found swaddling the best method. He is 12 weeks old and has been having jittery movements for a while and they want to get to the bottom of them!
We will not get any results for a couple of weeks though because he is so young and small they need a specialist to see them which will take about 2 weeks.

heartinthecountry · 12/01/2005 21:41

Hi jbadgirl - hope you get some answers soon.

jbadgirl · 12/01/2005 21:46

Yes hopefully, ds is still in hospital but he is in the right place, feel horrid leaving him but after 5 weeks of hardship its a good chance to have a little break.

Jools1967 · 12/01/2005 22:45

My son had an MRI scan at 4/5 weeks old and was sedated. We found it not to be a pleasant experience as he screamed almost constantly for the next 2 days so we felt it really upset his system. He does have some problems and is now booked in again for an emergency MRI scan next Tuesday. We are hoping that as he will then be 16 weeks he wont be so bad this time (fingers crossed). I have only joined this site tonight after being given the details from a friend.

chonky · 13/01/2005 09:43

Welcome Jools1967 - must be a worrying time for you (and you jbadgirl).

Hope you find mumsnet as helpful and supportive as I have. The SN board especially has a great bunch of gals . Ask anything you need to... there is a real mix of knowledge here.

jbadgirl · 13/01/2005 21:18

Hi again, just got home from the hospital (without ds ) had so much going on today seen loads of consultant people and they have all been really nice. Still no news yet but hopefully the beginning of nxt week. Ds had a fairly good day feeding and they have now given him some medication to try and stop his jittery movements, lets hope it helps.
Welcome Jools1967 and hope it all goes well on tuesday. It is so nice to talk to people who are in the same kinda situations so thanks to mumsnet!

Jools1967 · 13/01/2005 23:00
