Wheelchair recommendations

I am looking into buying a wheelchair for my DD who is ill and struggles with weakness, pain and fatigue which are severely affecting our ability to get out and about as she can only walk very short distances. It is not to be used all the time but for trips out for a couple of hours. I would expect to be pushing her in it rather than self propelling and I would like it to be able to deal with surfaces like the sorts of paths you get at National Trust properties and gardens.

Can anyone make any recommendations?

It depends on DD’s needs. How old is she? What type of support does she need? Does she need it to tilt in space?

The basic one often provided is the action 3 junior. You could look at something like the Hoggi wheelchairs (they do several types) or one of the Veldink wheelchairs.

You can put a front wheelchair on some wheelchairs so you can go over terrain that is more difficult.

Alternatively you could look at SN buggies such as the Delichon Delta, Speical Tomato Jogger, Axiom Endeavour or Axiom Phoenix.

@BrightYellowTrain thanks so much for replying.

DD is 7 years old, 126cm, 23kg.

She doesn't need it to tilt in space. She shouldn't need a lot of support and wouldn't need to sleep in it but just be able to be rested in it while someone else pushed her in it. Fairly basic type should be fine as long as it has arm rests for her to lean against a bit.

I'm reticent to have the buggy type of chair as I think DD would be self conscious about it and whereas I have pushed her in a wheelchair reasonably happily (hired from the red cross) I suspect a buggy might be harder on my wrists.

I don't want to spend tons so something in a similar price range to the Invacare would be good. We don't know how long DD will be like this and if she deteriorates then I would hope the NHS would supply a higher spec chair or that we might get funding towards one at least.

The Action 3 junior is worth trying then. It isn’t brilliant over rougher terrain but should be enough to give you an idea of if a wheelchair helps enough to pursue something more expensive either via self funding, charity or NHS. A wheelchair that is better over rougher and off-road terrain would be significantly more expensive.

In some areas, the wait for NHS wheelchair services is extremely long. You may want to ask for a referral now. If you decide an appointment is no longer necessary when DD reaches the top, no harm done.
