Worried ds2 will never live independently

Ds2 is 16. He is currently in the process of an autism assessment after 12 years of "all toddlers rock like that", "he can't be autistic because he has friends" , "he just has sensory issues", and then over 2 years in the waiting list. He doesn't have learning disabilities and while he isn't a massively high achiever who gets all 9's, he got into college to do a levels with a bit of subject tweaking.

One of his major problems is he struggles to communicate to us when he is ill. When questioned he says he is fine. Recently I saw dried blood on his sock when I was doing his laundry. I finally persuaded him to show me his feet and he had an infection that took 2 lots of strong antibiotics to shift. He was still insisting that he was fine and didn't need treatment.

Dh is very much a glass half full person when it comes to the dc and what they can achieve while I am a worrier. But even dh was saying that he was worried about ds2 going away to university because of he gets ill he just wont tell anyone. I am now concerned that he will never be able to leave home safely.
