Extra blood vessels in chest

Hi all.
My son had an ultrasound on his heart today. Was just routine test as he has developmental delay and other issues and Dr's currently don't know what is the root cause of his delays and our son is under going investigations and the heart scan was part of the investigations.
The sonographer said that our son has a murmur and also noticed some extra blood vessels in his chest that shouldn't be there but couldn't tell us if they were of concern or not and that he needs to send the images and report to his Dr and we have to wait for an appointment. Now we are sick with worry that something is wrong. Has anyone got any advice or knowledge on this please?

Hi, I don’t have any special knowledge but didn’t want your post to go unanswered as it sounds like a very worrying time for you. My understanding is that childhood murmurs are relatively common and often benign (ie they don’t cause any particular problems) but hopefully the appointment will come through soon and you will get some reassurance or something more to go on. If it turns out to be of significance then I’m sure that it’s far better that it has been picked up.

Thanks you @landofgiants for replying. I really appreciate it 😀
It's the extra blood vessels we are concerned about as the sonographer seemed really surprised that they were there and said "I will need your sons Dr to review this to be certain it isn't of concern". And when we asked what it was he said he wasn't sure and not allowed to give advice which I do understand but now we are so worried. Hopefuly we don't need to wait too long to speak with his Dr. I'm sure if it's urgent they will be in touch ASAP.

you can have a heart defect which isn’t a medical emergency / may not even need to be fixed but there is obviously a lot of correlation between heart defects and genetic syndromes (my son had a double aortic arch which was corrected and has 22q deletion). Is that what you were worried about? I assume that’s why they scanned your child’s heart given his delays.

AIUI there can be a certain amount of variation between people in terms of blood vessels and before modern technology you'd just have never known - e.g.: someone in our family had a large abdominal vessel much shorter than it should be meaning that the organs were bunched together unusually close along it, but they all functioned as normal so it was only seen accidentally whilst scanning.

Obviously one possible concern might be that the extras have grown to feed something with blood, e.g.: a tumour (though you would have thought that anything like would have been visible if the blood vessels were).
