Good morning all,

(I have name changed so not linked to my other threads)

My just turned 6 year old son has recently received his ADHD diagnosis, whilst this is no surprise whatsoever I was wondering if anyone could share any tips they have found useful when managing a child with ADHD?

Particularly around procrastination for day to day tasks (yesterday I asked him to go and put his dressing gown on and he comes out of his room 10 minutes later with hiking boots on and no dressing gown 🫠).

I am a very organised efficient person by nature so I am aware I need to adjust my own expectations but any tips would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

Is DS on medication? That can help.

What support is DS receiving at school?

Has DS had ed psych and OT assessments? They can help pinpoint specific difficulties with executive functioning and working memory and target strategies to individual needs.

Giving one direct instruction at time, in simple language and getting DC to repeat the instruction back to you can help. Checklists can also be helpful. And sadly, a lot of repeating yourself and reminders.

@EndlessLight thank you for your reply,

School have been very good he has various interventions like a now and next 'map', additional phonics sessions x3 times a week 1-2-1 and a quite space for him to go to if he needs it.

He has had ed psych assessment but not OT. I paid for the ed psych privately, I assume I would need to do the same for OT?

I feel like i'm going to be repeating myself for the next 15 plus years 🙈

Some find medication really helps with the difficulties you describe.

You could request an OT referral via the NHS. However, the range of what they do isn’t always as wide as what an independent OT can cover. NHS support is also unlikely unlikely to be ongoing long term. You could also consider requesting an EHCNA. If the LA agree to assess an OT assessment can be part of an EHCNA and if issued an EHCP can include OT.
