Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Can I share some good news/offer some hope?

Hi all

When ds was born on 1 feb this year he started fitting intractably 12 hours later and ended up in icu. Turns out he sustained brain damage at some point. Visual cortex badly damaged, likely not see etc. I posted a panicked message on the special needs topic and got some responses that basically told me it is not always as bad as the doctors tell you.

He is now 11.5 weeks and he left his consultant completely bushy tailed and excited when she saw him again for the first time yesterday. He started smiling at under four weeks, is 'talking' and rolling tummy to back endlessly. She says he is more visually alert than 'normal' babies of this age.

He has also outgrown his birth weight dose of anti-convulsant (by growing 2kilos in 11.5 weeks on breastmilk )and once he has had his first jabs next week we will start to wean him off the stuff.

So thanks people, you were right. No doubt some special needs will crop up but there is a lot of hope for a relatively normal life.

regarding his vision she said 'I don't know how he has done it but he obviously has. He must have found a way to rewire'.
