Can I apply for DLA?

Hi Mumsnet

My 3 year old son is currently under SLT, we have only had one appointment where they confirmed speech delay, lack of attention, lack of concentration. They are referring us to a paediatrician at the child development centre.
They are also referring us to the under 5’s SEN meeting where professionals discuss children with concerns. This has all been confirmed by the SENco at the Nursery.

As his parents, we suspect ASD or ADHD. His speech is more like a 2 year old. I’m a SAHM so spend a lot of time with him. We have countless broken toys from major meltdowns, if I don’t take him out for the day my home is trashed. He’s always been very hyper and I’ve been unable to teach him things like the alphabet because he doesn’t want to concentrate. He will sit and listen to a book and I’ve been able to teach him to swim because he really wants to. He can climb and jump without hurting himself, he just seems happiest doing what he wants to do and it’s hard to distract him. He will hyper focus on something he’s interested in. We have struggles everday and it is really hard. Someone has mentioned DLA and I wondered if anyone knows if it’s something I can apply for?

I don't know if I'm honest whether you'll need a diagnosis or not. Just wanted to say that the alphabet thing is a bit irrelevant if he's only 3. Most 3 year olds don't know their alphabet Wink

DLA is based on needs, not diagnosis. Not having a diagnosis doesn’t not mean DC are not eligible. If DS needs more care than a typical child his age, you should apply. Have a look at Cerebra’s guide.
