Hello all,

I'm the posterformerlyknownasdinosaur and I'm only really coming back to mumsnet after a longish break. Sorry I haven't been around much - I look forward to catching up with everyone's news about their DCs.

DS3 (four in August, ASD) has been at mainstream nursery for a term now. So far, it's been a qualified success - success, in that he's settled in well (despite his original LSA leaving very abruptly), enjoys it a lot, is making progress with PECS and is more alert, engaged and co-operative generally. Qualified in that he is still not communicating very much and is absolutely light years behind his nt peers in just about everything you can think of.

So - progress, but still a lot to come to temrms with. He went to a playscheme at the Autism Resource Base at school during the holidays and that was slightly bitter-sweet for me - seeing how well he fitted in .

Welcome back.

It's good to hear that ds3 is getting on so well.

I must be turning into an old gimmer because it only seems like 5 minutes ago that it was your ds1 who was 4ish.

Hello! Have been wondering how your DS is doing, he's such a similar age to mine. DS's m/s school nursery is vastly better than his private nursery. DS expressive speech has improved significantly, his receptive speech still way behind. He finally had a joint clinic appointment earlier this month after a mere 13 months on the list - after an hour the general conclusion was that he probably isn't on the spectrum, and that he "just" has language problems. He may end up going to a language unit, depending on how he settles into reception. So now having been thrown by the lack of diagnosis, I've got to ponder a statement application.

Hi Coppertop! I know, it's hard to believe that my DS1 (and yours) are sooooo grown-up now!

TotalChaos, that sounds like quite a lot to get your head round. Good luck with it all!

Hey glad he's cracked PECS

SixSpotBurnet · 22/04/2008 11:26

I'm not sure I would say he's cracked it yet - but he will at least do the picture exchange - still has trouble differentiating between two or more cards though.

that comes. remember you can use objects (3d fridge magnets good for example) if discrimination is difficult.

Davros · 22/04/2008 12:38

So pleased to hear from you and that things sound at least settled. Are you still working? Domestic arrangement still the same? Nosey cow I am!
As Yurt says, use 3D objects and fridge magnets are a great idea OR cut up packaging, get photos from internet shopping websites and Google Images etc etc (how do you think we do Twiglets!).

suedonim · 22/04/2008 13:58

Nothing to contribute to this thread, unfortunately, but just want to say 'Hi!' to Theposterformerlyknownas.

SixSpotBurnet · 22/04/2008 14:43

Good suggestions re fridge magnets and pictures etc! I must must must buy a laminator too.

Lovely to hear from you, Davros and Suedonim!

So good to see you back, and pleased to hear your DS is settling so well at his nursery.

moondog · 22/04/2008 18:44

Great news and very glad to hear about pECS.
He MUST move on fast to picture discrimination now. They need to really work on it to stop him getting locked in at this early stage.

SixSpotBurnet · 23/04/2008 09:36

Thanks Pinkchampagne!

Moondog - thanks for the warning . I think that his Autism Specialist Teacher is on the case but I am sure we could be doing more at home. Any tips gratefully received!

here you go.Get cracking!

SixSpotBurnet · 23/04/2008 14:24

Thanks for the link, moondog! Am at work now but will check it out later!

Davros · 23/04/2008 14:42

We could ALL do more at home! Moondog is so right to keep it moving. DS uses PECs well but has never moved on from I want X which works well but is raaather limited. He can ask for a hug as much as chocolate but.....

SixSpotBurnet · 23/04/2008 17:22

He is definitely developing communicative intent, which I think is partly as a result of the PECS stuff.

He is such a poppet, actually. I think they were all very fond of him in the Base during the holidays (and obviously because he's little he's a lot easier to look after than some of the bigger kids, which enhances his popularity ).
