Moving up to secondary school

Ds5 is 10. He was diagnosed with autism aged 6 and has a spiky profile. He is working at greater depth for maths, has the emotional development of a 3 year old and is average or a bit below for everything else. The LA have agreed to issue him with an ehcp and we are waiting for the first draft.

Yesterday we went to the open evening at the local comp where my other 4 dc either went or currently attend. I was quite apprehensive about whether this school could meet ds needs as at primary school he is not allowed to use scissors or leave the classroom unsupervised. But when I looked at the special needs schools, none of them seemed right for him either. I was really impressed by the school yesterday. The senco has asked me to let her see the draft copy of his ehcp before I agree to it so she can make sure he has everything he needs for secondary school. And all the teachers seemed really enthusiastic about having him too.

If DS needs 1:1 that can be provided in secondary as long as it is detailed, specified and quantified in F of the EHCP.

Have you looked at all special schools within travelling distance, including independent and out of area special schools?

Thank you. Me, his year 5 teacher and his current head teacher have been saying since the start that he needs 1-1 full time. Currently he is getting a lot of 1-1 time but not full time. I've looked at all the special needs schools within travelling distance including the independent ones and our of area but none seemed right for him.

If 1:1 isn’t detailed, specified and quantified in F when the EHCP is finalised, you can appeal.
