Hi, my 7 year old daughter really hates school, especially the playground. We’re in the process of moving her… it’s hard. She seems to be often daydreaming and is very into Roblox at the moment. I just wondered if asking the class teacher daily what their favourite colour is, could be a sign of autism?

Sounds more like anxiety to me or attention seeking?

Drench · 16/09/2024 17:48

She doesn’t like any attention usually. It was on her end of yr2 report. She’s my youngest, I thought it seemed an unusual comment. There is neurodiversity in the family.

Did you ask her why?

Drench · 16/09/2024 18:24

She just becomes embarrassed and can’t say. She asks me my favourite colour most days too. She can’t really express to me any delicate feelings like why she cried at school etc. she’s very loving and cuddly though… and might tell much later on. Over the last couple of years it’s upsetting but if she falls over or hurts herself she has to be alone and won’t be comforted:(

My daughter asks people their favourite animal, favourite colour and to rate things all the time. It's repetitive and she usually knows the answer. I feel she is seeking connection without unpredictability of most conversations. My daughter has a lot of autistic traits, she has her assessment next month after years of waiting but we and school are pretty certain she is autistic.

Thank you so much @AnnonymousMum for this insight. I realise there are other very repetitive questions daily, thinking about it. This is very interesting!

I've heard this described as being a type of stim - asking the same question to get the same predictable response because it is reassuring and aids regulation.

My son asks me the same questions over and over and asks me to rate things. I know he is seeking reassurance. He is neuro divergent with developmental trauma in the mix so is very insecure and anxious about many things.
