School work refusal

Hi

My DS has not long turned 6.

He's not diagnosed but suspected on the ASD spectrum.
We have had an assessment done when he had turned 4, consultant agreed he has traits but to give him more time, whole other thread tbh.

He's under SALT. Seen by OT and Ed Psy.
Awaiting outcome of EHCP.

He enjoyed reception, whilst refused some work he did do the majority.

Speaking with school senco this week, OT haven't done report yet but have gave her some pointers until reports in.
But she also said he's refusing to do work and he's finding it hard.
He has a TA with him when they can to help as he does manage better with an adult next to him and things do need broken down for him. But of course they can't be with him all day right now.

We knew he would struggle in the transition and I know it's only been afew weeks. But school have been great in doing the best they can with who and what they have. Can't fault them.

I suppose I'm worried he's going to get into a rut of just saying no to everything and not even attempt to do it, and I'm not sure how I can break him out of it?

Whilst he has his struggles he is bright in areas, loves phonics and reading.

Just wondered if anyone else is in the same boat or has been?

Ask the teacher if you could have some of the work for next week ahead of time. Go through it with him and help him understand what to do. Then next week when he does it in class he will find it much easier. The teacher can praise him and you can all “reset”. Pre teaching can be really effective at encouraging engagement if used thoughtfully.

Is the LA sticking to the EHCP timescales?

Even if the school can’t provide full-time 1:1 they should be differentiating DS’s work to a point where he can access it. They should be breaking tasks down (easier if they look at placement within the classroom) and checking understanding. They could also look at alternative methods of recording work e.g. a whiteboard, tablet with speech recognition, laptop, using manipulatives in maths, using word banks, a sand tray. Are they providing lots of opportunities for sensory input?

We're currently in week 18, the assessments from professionals were done pretty quick and not a thing since.

They do break it down for him but ofc not having a full time 1-2-1 I'm not sure how much of his day is 'on his own' as such so will question what happens in these times. Will also ask about alternative learning as nothing like that has been mentioned.

Yes, he has movement breaks and time to sit with his box which has all his bits in

The LA is in breach of the statutory timescales. Send IPSEA’s model letter to the LA. If that doesn’t work you need a pre-action letter. It is worth reading IPSEA and SOSSEN’s websites to learn about EHCP.

They've just rang, his EHCP has been declined, I'm heartbroken.

You need the LA to send the formal letter so you can appeal.
