DS constantly trying to escape

DS managed to unlock the door a few months ago (twisting knob to unlock type of door that was newly installed by LL) it had an adhesive lock on it however the weight of the door ripped it off the wall on this ocassion and he went running down the street. I grabbed the baby and went after him, he was stood with a neighbour who I thanked but she was shouting at me saying he could have been seriously hurt. She is absolutely right and we since installed a top bolt (LL refused our request but we begged them to let us for the safety of our son) 3 days later SS called up to ask how he got out and what we are doing to prevent this. Case closed the same day.

Fast forward 2 days ago. DH was changing baby when DS walked into our bedroom where DH mistakenly thought he closed the window enough to engage the window latch/guard (which only lets the window open a little) however it wasn't and DS managed to push the window wide open - by standing on the windowsill as there's no other way he reached. By the time DH walked in, DS was sitting on the floor. Thank goodness he did not fall out and get hurt

We have ordered the bars for the windows now. We should have done this sooner but up until now we have been making sure the windows click so they only open a crack. We are extremely upset this happened and are now terrified SS will take our dcs away from us if someone saw it and called them as it would be the second report of the same nature. We are doing our absolute best but clearly falling short of the mark

Not sure what i'm asking really but just wanted to get it off my mind. Feeling really down about it all

Forgot to add ds is 6. He is not aware of danger, we have tried to explain things to him but it doesn't work. Even when out and about he will try to run but we use the reigns

Take a breath. Children’s Services are not going to remove your DC for this.

Request a home OT assessment. They can look at making the house safer and more secure.

For out of the house, do you have a blue badge?

Neverendingissues · 03/09/2024 23:28

Thank you for replying @EndlessLight yes we have a blue badge for ds which helps a lot

I just didn't want SS to see it as a pattern or iykwim! Thank you for the suggestion to get an OT assessment. We will go down that route

Even if children’s services saw it as a pattern, they wouldn’t look to pursue removal for two episodes where you had and still were trying to secure the house and make it safer.

Thank you @EndlessLight feel less anxious today. Had a lot on that day when I posted and my anxiety was through the roof. Thank you for replying :)
