Last month the first annual San Francisco Bay Area Autism Film Festival took place in Palo Alto. A SF-based friend of mine flagged this to me.
The audience was shown several films:
'The Third Parent'
'Elle s'appelle Sabine' (winner at Cannes, tells the story of a 38-year old woman with autism)
'Today's Man' (about a man with Aspergers)
'Refridgerator Mothers' (about the awful theory in the 1950's that autism was caused by failed attachment)
and
'Autism: The Musical' (an award-winning documentary about five autistic children rehearsing for a performance)
Autism: The Musical is absolutely fascinating. I am going to try to get hold of the DVD, but here's the link for the movie, and here's a YouTube clip.
It's such an uplifting story, and deserves attention. It just comes to show how a dedicated teacher with an open mind can help these children achieve amazing things.
