Cappuccino · 14/04/2008 16:13

my dd can't go to brownies this week because they are going on an orienteering outing which 'may well go off the paths'

there are 3 disabled children and they have all been told to stay at home

'we try to include them in everything' said Brown Owl

I remember your previous thread re Brownies, Capp.
Might it be worth contacting Brownies HQ about the issue with the helper, as that seems so unfair.

thats really not fair however my exoperience of the brownies for dd was too awful for words

Buckets · 14/04/2008 19:20

You'd think there'd be a manual on how not to exclude disabled brownies for brown owls from HQ wouldn't you?

NotABanana · 14/04/2008 19:29

This is just wrong and I think you need to make an official complaint.

Did they give the parents the option to go too to assist their DD's?

hercules1 · 14/04/2008 19:31

No, no, no, no. They cant do this. They don't do the trip if all cant be included. Write to your local papers. YOu cannot legally discriminate against someone because of their disability.

Cappuccino · 14/04/2008 20:39

I sent this

"I have emailed them the following hope it is not unreasonable

hanks for your email

You don't mention whether or not the decision about the unsuitability
of the activity for children with disabilities was made with the Scout
leader in question - it is unclear from what you have said whether you
know it will be unsuitable, or that you assume it will be.

It would have been nice to have had more notice especially as we
employ a helper for my daughter who makes a weekly commitment.

If the activity is designed to go off paths is it possible to create
for future years an inclusive tracking activity that could be provided
as standard or an alternative to the main activity?

Anyway thanks for letting me know - there are a couple of other things

  • do you yet have the number of the disability co-ordinator? And did
you receive my email some time back about pack holiday?"

am getting increasingly about brownies and would think about switching packs but dd's friends go

I already have issoos with them there has been a previous thread; about how I have to employ a helper who they have this idea will also help with other SN children who don't have a helper because they are less affected by their disability, even though I pay the helper out of my own pocket

OP posts:
Cappuccino · 14/04/2008 20:41

oh I am glad other people think it is not reasonable

I don't want to make things difficult for dd but I am really about this

I have asked for the number of the disabled co-ordinator regionally before because I want to talk to her about some of these problems

OP posts:
misdee · 14/04/2008 20:44

that is so so not on.

we have several brownies with disabilies in dd1 pack, and they are always included in everything. dd1 is also learning sign language to communicate with one of the girls who has a hearing impairment.

edam · 14/04/2008 20:49

Oh, I'd be furious if it were my dd being treated like this. What a cow. And hercules is right, they are breaking the law (the DDA).

chatee · 14/04/2008 21:09

Honestly, when they arrange any activity it must be done so that all children can be included regardless of their disability. If they cant, they dont do it. They do something else or they do nothing. I am so on your behalf.

hercules1 · 15/04/2008 08:08

Perhaps Brown Owl needs to go on a course to update herself on disability rights.

BBBee · 15/04/2008 10:24

in breach of the disability discrimination act.

poppy27 · 15/04/2008 14:06

Hi Capp
I'm new to mn but am disgusted at the treatment of your dd. I am a girl guide leader and would never ever plan an activity that was not inclusive. It is against the law to discriminate and the brown owl should know that and have taken appropriate steps to make the activity relevant to all the girls. A few years back there was a pack produced called See Me which gave a basic overview of some sn's and disabilities plus as you say the brown owl should have taken advice and training from the county disability advisor. I am so angry on your behalf. I have RA so many of the activities we do have to take the my own disability into account!
If you have no joy with the DA is it possible to take it up with your district commissioner.

sparklyfairypie · 17/04/2008 02:38

Hiya as an ex brownie leader - did it for 10years - I am appauled!!! I suggest speaking to the district commisioner.

Cappuccino · 17/04/2008 09:58

thanks everyone

I have the number of the disability co-ordinator so I am going to give her a ring tonight

I knew it was wrong - it's great to have such good back-up
