money for a child with a statement

DH was talking to somebody last night who works for Ofsted and they said that £11,000 is available per year for a carer for a child with a statement.

Made me feel better about Ellie having a statement. When she first got it others around us said their SN child didn't need one and I was worried thinking that they obviously thought Ellie had quite bad special needs to warrant one!!

But I am happy now that she does have one, I know when she attends mainstram part or full time that she will have her own carer.

It is a lot of money to be put aside for your child isnt it?!

Sorry, but its news to me. Did he find out anymore about this? I hate the way people almost compete about whether their child needs a statement or not, its not a competition its about the child and their needs and some of those people may be wishing they'd tried harder to get one in the future.

is that the 11k that they'll pay for a one-to-one anniebear?

I know that dd's unit place costs the lea something like 20-25k pa as it obviously costs a lot for the specialised teaching, SALT etc

Ah yes, it could be the cost of a 1:1 in educational setting, not carer.

I presume that would be the one to on.

Thats all that was said, it was just something somebody said from Ofsted, just some body he was chatting to.

As you know DH aren't going to ask questions like us Mums would!!!!!!

The people I know weren't competing over whether our children have statements or not, it was just that their children didn't require them and think it was more me being over sensitive to everything as usual and other SN children around me were not having statements.

LOL annie about DHs not asking questions we mums would! Maybe the comment about being competitive was a bit harsh (cold light of new year and all that!) but many parents who genuinely believe their children don't "need" a statement may find out otherwise later and are often given an unreasonably optimistic outlook. Hopefully this is not the case with the people you know. The main thing about a statement that is superior to other levels of support is that it is LEGALLY binding and has to be provided (in theory anyway!).

my friend was 'showing off' that her son musn't need speech therapy anymore because they missed an appointment and SALT signed them off!

I was just astonded she would think he didnt need it because of that!

God Fio, your new name is just cracking me up! Sounds a bit deluded thinking that speech therapy isn't needed just because they don't provide it...!

we had ultra competative mum at my dd's last special school, it was awful. i remember the once we were sitting in the staff room with two other families and "her" and we all just kept looking at one another rolling our eyes
