Air tags for neurodivergent children

Please does anyone have any advice on air tags? I have 2 neurodivergent children waiting for assessments, DD is nearly 4 and my DS is 8, while me and my DH doesn’t take our eyes off them while we are outside of home it does get tricky sometimes to catch up with them when they sprint off. My DD doesn’t have any sense on danger and would happily walk off with a stranger, I have purchased a wrist reins recently to try but I know I can’t keep them on her while at the park etc so was thinking maybe if I had a AirTag it would be a back up, do these AirTags work good for tracking children? My DS isn’t as bad, he will run and hide in built up areas but would never be to far away but for piece of mind I’m thinking about getting him one too. What is other people’s view one these?

I have never used AirTags to track children, but they work well for tracking possessions except in remote areas because they rely on Apple devices.

Thank you for your reply, we’ve got a few days out booked this summer holidays and after last half term I’m willing to try anything 😣 I’ve brought ear defenders, sen buggy, lockable wrist reins ( she will probably scream the whole place down ) but I’m willing to give them a good go. Im hoping if she has an air tag on then I will be able to let her loose to play at the parks while we are out, I really need to find something that works for the sake of the rest of the family

We’ve used an AirTag on my DS but have never had to track him with it.

One drawback is that DS knows it’s hooked to him in summer clothes and he tries to remove it, whereas in winter he doesn’t know it’s hooked to his coat. May not be a problem if your DC will wear it on a necklace or bracelet.

Air tags also rely on an Apple device being in range (doesn’t have to be your device… anyone’s phone), so if you’re going somewhere remote it won’t work!

We got one for my son. He happily wears it in a bracelet. It's a just in case thing.
Things to note - you need to be near other phones to ping off to trace.
I traced in a playground successfully but in reality I was tracking DH who was with him but wouldn't answer his phone.
As far as I can tell it can only be paired with one phone so that might be an issue if two adults want to be able to track them depending on who is out with them.

Thank you for your reply, after todays outing of my daughter running off multiple times I have just ordered a air tag, wristband and a keyring, I’m at my wits end with her, I don’t know how we are supposed to go on days out as a family, she’s so fast, I can’t keep up with her. We even gave wrist reins ago for the first time, they didn’t last long she refused to walk and scream the place down. My plan for the air tag is on days out ( if a can brave any more ) so there should be enough phones around to pin off
