ND 9 year old suddenly struggling with bladder control

My ND DS has been dry since he was 3 years old. Never had an accident at nursery or school.
In the last 2 months, he has suffered minor accidents at night. He hasn't completely wet the bed but has soaked through his pants and sometimes his pyjamas. He has also come home from school with moist patches - not soaked through.
We have broached it with him gently and he says he is unable to tell when his bladder is full, hence ends up with wet pants in the time it takes him to get to the toilet. He makes it a point to use his break and lunch times to go and is not the type to delay going because of not wanting to miss out on playing. He is otherwise well and healthy.
Is it possible for a child who has been dry for more than 6 years to suddenly lose the ability to tell when they need to wee? Why has this come on now? Is it something to do with his ASD?
I'd really appreciate some help as he is at the age where he is embarrassed it's happening but we don't know how to help him.

Have you tried taking him to the GP? Worth ruling out a urinary tract infection.

He randomly developed pain in his groin so we had it looked at. He had multiple visits and an ultrasound to find the cause but it all amounted to nothing.

I wonder if it's worth raising it again.

Hi! My boy is asd and just about to turn 10. We have had problems on and off with bed wetting over the last 5years or so and also during times when he is engrossed in whatever he is doing. Anyway, it turned out he had a tight foreskin (probably not the cause for your little man) which had severely scarred the tubes so he was unable to empty his bladder fully between toilet visits which caused repeated infections. Now it took us years to find this out (he was 8when we finally got him to the doctors) because he could never explain to us what the problem was (he would say it felt weird or hurt but couldn’t tell us why! Or where ) so he was treated for the infections but not the foreskin issue until this year. When he had an infection he quite often said it stung, or had lower tummy pains and always came hand in hand with the bed wetting.

Sorry to hear about your DSs ordeal @Mummabear121422 I'm going to make an appointment with the GP.
Thanks for responding x

Once you have checked for things like infections and constipation, you could consider sensory needs. Some DC with sensory differences are unable to tell when they need to the toilet.
